Well it finally snowed in Co. Tyrone and here is my review as promised. :D

My boys are kept in a hutch, within a shed, and I was using newspaper as the base and hay as the top layer. But unless I could magically conjure up a huge supply of newspapers the layer was just too thin to absorb the pee.

Now I use a few sheets of newspaper as the first layer and top with a layer of Snowflake, which doesn't need to be too thick, and then finish with a good sprinkling of hay to totally cover the layer of Snowflake - they tramp it down fairly quickly so it makes a great hay carpet!

I am really impressed with the Snowflake, it is soft and not dusty and has been really good at absorbing any moisture, and every few days when I remove the bedding all I need to do is roll up my newspaper with the bedding into my 'fish supper' packages and bin - which does suit me (once the air is squashed out it goes like a pancake so saves me from filling the bin too quick!).

We are getting compost bins next spring from the council so I am hoping to recycle it, but at the moment I just squash the waste in a bin liner first, and then put in the bin.

I have kept the bale of Snowflake inside the larger outer bag it was delivered in, so any bits that fall out while I am scooping will fall into the outer bag, and not on the floor, so I can use that later :tu:

It is also great for spot cleaning too, and the price is great as I ordered the extra large size, and it looks like it will last for ages.

Once this pack runs low I will see about getting some delivered to my local pet shop as @BossHogg recommended, as I don't want my next lot to go missing via Royal Mail again.

So it gets 5 stars from me :cake:

See if your local independent pet shop can order it for you, failing that, search for Plevin snowflake stockists and see how much they charge to deliver. ;)

Or you could try buying a huge "horse" size bale from your local horse feed merchants. I think they are about £8-9 for a 15kg bale. Very economical compared to the price of small bales from pet shops.

I am wavering between snowflake and fitch at the moment - pros and cons for each but I am finding that snowflake absorbs smells MUCH better than fitch (as in, no smell between cleans, whereas I'm finding fitch a bit stinky after just a few hours).

Also - the XXL bag (massive!) is £11 or two for £20 in my local pet shop. I think I'm the only person who buys it, but they have been good at ordering in before so worth a try!

I buy 3 large bales a month at £8.50 a bale from my pet shop. That sorts me out for 3 large double decker hutches.

Very interesting thanks. I am a Fitch user at the moment and happy with it but I do like to try alternatives. Snowflake is wood shavings based isn't it? Assuming yes, presumably it's advisable to fully cover it with hay to prevent the Snowflake drying our piggies feet?
