Hey!

I have had my 3 sows for about 3 weeks now. They are 6 months old and sisters.

I have noticed that the smallest one sneezes occasionally and I first noticed it when we first got her. She is eating well and she is such a fidget, especially compared to the other 2.

I do not, and have not, used wood shavings in their hutch. I use newspaper and plenty of Hay. They are fed on vegetables in the morning and pellets in the evening. They also have a hay rack that is always full of hay.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. It doesn't seem to bother her.

It could be an URTI. This is going to sound a bit of a horrible question but is the liquid coming from her nose discoloured? Is she making any squeaky or popping sounds from her nose when she breathes? These are symptoms of an infection which you need to take her to the vets for to be treated with antibiotics. I think it would either be with Baytril or Septrin. Hope this helps.

She could also possibly have a little hay or the like stuck in her nostril

There is not liquid coming from her nose that I can see and I listened to her breathing and it sounds fine (no popping or wheezing).

Is it possible she could be allergic to the Hay?

I have only really heard her do it when I am holding her. Maybe she is allergic to my perfume or something or maybe it's just bacause I can't hear her when she's in her hutch as they are quite quiet sneezes!

Thanks :)

is your hay maybe a bit dusty?
I had this trouble with hay here in OZ grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr and our boy Sully used to sneeze lots, we then removed the hay and used towels but still had a hay rack, it seemed to help him!
Good luck i hope she's ok xoxoxoxo
Well done for picking up on this too.......you're a lovely piggie mum xoxoxoxo

mine had this, but also had a runny nose, and a couple of months ago cleared.

I changed my bedding to profleece and also buy hay from www.dustfreehay.co.uk. I think this helped with the problem.

He did go on Baytril but this didnt help at all. Soemtimes piggys get allergies to all kind of things, such as dust in the house, your perfume as you said and many other things!

Maybe try changing the bedding and try and avoid wearing perfume, whilst you hold them. You just need to try and eliminate things which you think it could be.

That's good - it could mean that your piggie is just sneezing from the dust in the hay. Sorry if I worried you but sometimes you can't be too sure :)
