Hi guys,

I was wondering if you could help me please?

My piggy is sneezing alot, I am not sure what it could be we use the same bedding and the same hay. Does anyone else's sneeze?

Thank you

Mine sneeze occasionally but not very often. Could she be allergic to something? I once let my 2 run round on top of the stairs and they both started sneezing because it was a bit dusty

could be an allergy to hay, sawdust, or something else. is there any discharge when sneezing? any noise when breathing? i would on the safe side take to the vets and get then throughly checked over. good luck and welcome to the forums from me and the girls in oz. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: thinks like air freshners are poisionous to piggies so maybe perfume, scented things could be upsetting them too. hugs to your piggies :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Do you use sawdust as that is not recommended?
But you say that you haven't changed anything related to his bedding, so that shouldn't be the problem.
Does he have a dried discharge around his nose?

Apparently guinea pigs can catch human colds!

Yes, guinea pigs can contract human diseases such as colds and things, obviously not sickness. Fergie lost a bit of weight just after having her and she lost her hair on her back, that was a mix of mites and sneezing, catching my attractive cold.

Usually its hay, hay if left for a while can become quite potent with spores, also the ammonia and poo can make it worse, if you have a hay area, I would replace it every day.

Its natural for them to sneeze, but just not all the time obviously O0

Sneezing can be simple allergies if there is no runny nose, etc. We switched to fleece and this cut down a lot on sneezing. You can give childrens liquid benaryl or sudafed if they get too congested. This is only for early problems. If runny nose, coughing, wheezing, crackling of chest, difficulty breathing, etc occur you need more.

Childrens medicines should not be used for piggies. A trip to the vet for a checkup would be better for the piggies then they can be given the once over by someone who is qualified to do so.

It is either a slight allergy - which may or may not need treatment depending on how severe it gets - this could mean changing the pigs bedding to something less allergy inducing.

Guineas cannot catch human illnesses/colds, they can however get URIs (upper respiratory infections). These are usually accompanied by the pig hunched up, watery eyes and running nose. However, pigs do a good job of not showing illnesses, so they may be hiding a URI from you! (Even if just a minor one!) URIs cannot be gotten rid of without anti biotics from the vet, which is usually Baytril, and occasionally Septrin.

So I would strongly advise taking a trip to the vet just to rule out any URIs, as once they've got hold, they can be a pain to shift. :)
