When is sneezing classed as an issue. I have a boar who has on and off URI symptoms that go away after a couple hours, this happens maybe once every 3 months.

The past couple days he has been sneezing more, around one sneeze every couple hours. I understand it could just be situational irritants but then there’s obviously the fact he could have a URI.
He also greatly enjoys being in his cage mates long hair and covered in as much hay as possible.

I’ve been back and forth to the vets around 20 times these past two months for my pigs and my dog, and obviously not raring to go to the vet, although no one is. The vet is also open for a couple emergency hours tomorrow morning then not open till monday.

Could perhaps giving his cage a clean, it’s coming up to cleaning time, and putting some boiling water next to their cage help?
Thanks

Intermittent Sneezing which goes after a few hours is not usually a sign of a URI. More often it’s due to irritation in the airway - hay dust etc. A sneeze will usually clear it.

Sneezing is not a typical sign of the onset of a URI either. It’s not the same as for human viral colds. Sneezing can occur with a URI but it tends to be amongst last symptoms and not necessarily at all.

Has he been treated for a URI?

Boiling water next to the cage can help

He had been treated for a URI around two years ago. Since then he has had the on and off squeaky nose and sneezes which fix themselves in a couple hours.
We spoke to the vet and she had reason to believe he perhaps had smaller nose canals as this was an ongoing issue and never went to the extent of discharge from the nose etc.
We changed to fleece bedding as a result of this and the frequency of his “episodes” of squeaky nose are far less.

When he is sniffing around he sounds bunged up, when i listen to his breathing his lungs sound clear but his nose sounds like when we would have some snot in our nose, not clear but we are still able to breathe, it’s just a bit uncomfortable.

This sounds a bit silly but is there a chance a guinea pig can have a very mild URI to the point where it would be like a human cold? I understand that a URI is bacterial whereas a cold is a virus. I’m just thinking out loud, as i understand bacterial infections are much more dangerous if left untreated.

I’m thinking i might try the boiling water and keep an close eye on him, as he is completely fine apart from the squeaky nose and I don’t believe my vet would take him in on the limited weekend hours.
Thanks for your reply

If his chest is clear and all the symptoms are only nasal then from my knowledge it won’t even be a mild URI. It does sound like a nasal issue.
I would try the boiling water bowl next to the cage
