Hi all

I’ve been watching my piggie over the past month as she’s been sneezing on and off. She’s a bit of an allergy piggie (gets irritated skin easily) but has been eating and weight stable. The past week she started sneezing more than usual, had a small drop of 30g which she’s now gained back and a clear discharge has been coming out of her nostrils on and off. It’s been about 3 times I’ve caught the discharge this past week.

My partner is a registered nurse for humans and listened to her chest and heard a bit of wheezing on one side. This cleared up after a day or so and when we took her to the exotic vet they didn’t hear anything odd with her chest, heart or lungs.

They did as a precaution and because one of our other piggies had pneumonia last month put her on antibiotics and meloxicam.
She’s 1.1kg and on a dose of Septrin (240mg/5ml) of 0.4ml twice a day so about 19.2mg each dose. Is this okay? This is one of the lowest doses we’ve had for a piggie her weight (we’ve been prescribed by other vets Septrin to two other piggies around the 1.1kg mark - 0.5ml twice a day for UTI and 0.6ml twice a day for pneumonia). We were only meant to go for 5 days ending today but today she snotted out this discharge, I’ve attached a photo. And she seems to be breathing harder looking at her sides than our other piggies although the vet and also my partner can’t hear any crackling (which our other piggie had when there was fluid in the lungs and pneumonia).

We couldn’t get another vet appointment till Wednesday morning (4 days away). Do I keep going with the antibiotic till then instead of taking her off and does she need a stronger dose?

Hi

Please contact the treating clinic for their advice on keeping on treating with respiratory symptoms still present until her appointment.

All the best.
