Miley my texel piggy had been abit off day b4 yest so was keeping an eye on her, had checked her teeth & everything but nothing obvious. Today i gave the piggys their grass and she tucked in, i came back and she was sat with grass stuck in her mouth. I pulled it out and discovered 1 of her bottom teeth was wobbly, on closer inspection - its snapped/broken near the base.

She cant eat/drink properly so ive syringe fed water & mushed up pellets.

I'm planning on phoning the vet first thing but would like some advise please.

What can be done ? Will they snap it off ? Will she need an op? :{

I'm experienced with having to feed a pig that cant feed themselves, but only when the tooths snapped clean off.

Please help xx

hi,
My boy Ronnie has got a broken lower incisor tooth. First thing to do is get the rest of the teeth checked to make sure they're all ok, also need to check that the nerve/pulp is not exposed on the broken tooth.

I spoke to a specialist vet who advised me that if the pulp was exposed that he could have his tooth capped but that would probably have to be done by a dental specialist. i've not had to have this done with Ronnie. The vet advised that it can take a few months for the tooth to grow out and that Ronnie may need to be on pain relief for that time.

Ronnie was struggling a little with some of his harder food and also picking up some of his veg/hay.
I cut his veggies up into strips and he has hay in a bowl as well as in the hay rack so he can pick them up easier. At first I also supplemented him with critical care but he's eating his dry food again now.
I started Ronnie off on metacam daily but he seems to be doing ok without it at the moment. I'm monitoring his weight also.

His tooth's still broken and not come through yet but he's doing well at the moment, I'm just extra watchful of him and the amount of food he's eating.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks.

I went first thing today & got to see the lovely vet

He removed the broken tooth where it had broken up to & cut the other to a similar length.

He gave her a pain relief injection because where the tooth had broke it has left the pulp exposed, shes now on baytril for 5 days.

Only cost £21 too ! 7 for teeth work, 7 for pain relief + 7 for baytril

Any ideas on any other foods other than grated carrot & soaked pellets?

The vet said vegetarian baby food but which type ? theres millions lol

I'd probably get some oxbow critical care or supreme recovery sachets to supplement her diet with as they're more balanced than using baby food.

Veggies wise I just feed Ronnie his normal stuff but just slice it up into smaller pieces, he loves carrot, cucumber, peppers, celery, lettuce, spring greens, parsley etc etc.

I would just watch in case she needs more pain medication, if she's struggling I'd ask your vet to give you some metacam to give at home.
She's more likely to make an effort to eat if she's not feeling painful.

Will keep fingers and little piggie toes crossed for her x:)

Hi

If its only one tooth broken then to be honest you dont need to do anything, it would grow back really quickly, within a week or two. As for pain relief. their teeth dont contain any nerves which is why they can be easily clipped if needed.

Just keep an eye on them to ensure they grow back evenly and get any minor un-evenness sorted with a quick dental checkup after a couple of weeks

If one is broken then the others should never be clipped as that will only promote furture growth problems
