Well smudgie was castrated yesterday.& it seems to have gone very well. We had to take him in before 9am...When the vet explained that he could have a heart attack under the anasthetic my little boy was in tears..he sobbed all the way home saying the bad man was going to kill his guinea pig.(now this is a very intelligent 8 year old & he wouldn't accept that it prob wouldn't happen) We were told to ring after 3pm to see how smudge was so at 1 min past I was on the phone! Smudgie was fine & we could pick him up.He had had some of the fruit & veg we'd sent in with him. When we got home We took the top off the cat carrier & placed it on the settee with one of us on guard watching over him.he was looking for food so i went out & cut him some fresh grass which he loves, let him have an hrs peace then bought his sister in ...he immediatly perked up & spent half an hour chasing her around the carrier with his nose up her bum only stopping to eat!I kept him indoors overnight & this morning when I bought coco in again he tried to mount her so he's obviously fine!. His wound is clean & theres no swelling He's gone back into his hutch this morning. I'm in work till 7pm but my OH is under strict instructions to phone me if smudge seems 'a bit off' (i'm only 5 mins from home) He doesn't have to go back to the vets as he's got dissolvable stitches unless he bleeds or gets a swelling.I can't believe how well he's recovered.

thats very good (:

hope he stays at his usual self, hopefully you wont have to return to the
vets with hime for a while.

Great news, glad he is doing well. You will need to wait at least 3 weeks before putting him with his sis though x

Thanx everyone for your good wishes for smudge..He's still doing fine & he's having supervised time with coco.I love watching them together the way they chunner to each other...I'm sure he's told her all about his op! he was very jealous today when coco had a run around the garden i had him in my arms & he kept trying to jump out.i had to hand feed him grass to stop him wheeking at me. Does anyone know how long I'll have to keep him off the grass.is it untill his stitches dissolve or can it be sooner.

Glad to hear that Smudge is doing well.
I have had three boars neutered in total - Rikkyboy, Shaun and Stuart ... all recovered really well and live very happy lives with female companions.

Rikkyboy sadly passed away recently and I moved Josie who he lived with into live with Stuart and Sparrow and I have Shaun now living with two sows ... well at the moment Shaun has little Junior living with him as well after Princess, one of his companions, gave birth unexpectedly 7 weeks after I got her.

Keep an eye on his wound and if it seems clean then I am sure you won't have any problems now.
Naughty vet saying things in front of your son ... the vet didn't need to go into detail, just say it was obviously a risk but they would look after him as best they can.
