I know its silly, but I wonder if there is an incorect way to pet a guinea. smores seems ok with being held, snuggled, and definatly likes to be hand fed treats, and things. But when I go to pet him or rub him..he throws his head back as if to say..stop that I dont like that.

I thought maybe his skin issue is causing him to be uncomfortable or ...do some pigs just not appreciate Petting.

Choco on the other hand...sits very still, enjoys his scratches and rubs and pets...and proceeds to get so comfy he goes to sleep.

Smores also constantly makes a beep beep beep noise when he's when he's being petted. if i stop..he shuts up. But I'm not sure what noise it is...I'm trying to listen to sounds on the net...but nothing sounds like it. Its like a cross between a wheek and a purr. (from what i've heard).

I'm trying to keep in mind that we just got them saturday, and smores is a week and a half younger than choco. but I just want to know if I'm doing anything wrong.

Try not to worry too much! All piggies are different, two are never the same lol. I have 6 pigs and each of them have their own distinct like and or dislike of how they are petted. You just have to find your way into Smores' heart, that's all. :) Maybe you could try giving him his favourite food while you are holding him, and just go slowly. He will learn to trust you as long as you are super calm and patient with the little man. Another trick might be to hold he and Choco together.... he might learn something lol! Good luck! XO

He loves munching on bell pepper while I'm holding him, and will even nudge my hand as if to say more please. The only thing ever fusses over is petting. I will try holding them both, thanks for the tips

It is hard for us humans, but not all animals like to be petted. I think that it is a mistaken belief that guinea pigs enjoy being cuddled. There are exceptions, of course. But even if they sit still that doesn't mean anything.

1 of my girls (Leila) and 1 of my boys (Hermes) both do this when I pet them on their head, otherwise they will quite happily sit there and let you pet the rest of them, I even got Hermes doing a little bubbly purr the other night.

My other boy (Fry) will sit there not moving or making a sound while he has lap time, whereas my other girl (Nibbler) just won't sit still; she's really inquisitive and hates being held, she is quite vocal about it too, although she is happy to be pet in the cage where she will often purr and end up collapsing onto her side.

Like people have said already, different piggies have different preferences.

Well I tried the holding them both and petting them at the same time. Imagine my delight when smores snuggled up to choco, and they both were petted guietly with no protests or head bobbing. LOL...I do however think that smores just isnt quite into the petting thing so much. So I will respect that and just cuddle him. He does injoy the cuddling..because he dosent figet, or try to get away...and tonight when I put a warm fleecy blanket over them they BOTH went to sleep , snuggled together up against my shoulder. They were happy piggys. smores is a bit more active and hyper compared to choco. I do think they are VERY differnt in personality.
I did find ONE place smores dosent seem to mind being petted. It from his tip of the nose to about in between his eyes. If I go further than that, he bobs.
so apparetly he likes his nose petted, but thats it. Works for me. I'll give him a pet there everyonce in a while..but truly if he dosent like petting..I'll just cuddle him. I"m going to make a bedding change. Right now I have layers of newspaper, and a thick covering of timothy hay..but having to change it every other day. It will get expensive. So I think I am going to go the newspaper and a few towels on top of it..and then in one corner I'll give them a fleecy spot to sleep (under thier hidy house)..and I'll put a puppy pad underneath that corner underneath the newspaper layer on that side. Since I know fleese just lets is soak right thru..and dosent hold it well.I can just change the fleece, and that corner more often. I'm finding a little hand vac handy for sucking up the dried poos....lol. I bet I'm the only idiot that does that. ...anythingn I should be concerned about? such as them chewing the towels or fleece?

Not all piggies are snuggle monsters. Find his sweet spot, and eventually, you may go a bit further. Don't hold him for longer than he likes, but give him lots of praise while he sits with you.

My piggles have never chewed up any fleece or towels since I changed them over to that type of bedding. Be careful to inspect the bedding on a regular basis so that you can trim off any frayed strings etc. Wouldn't want anyone to nom them up!

They are all different? Is he by any chance an aby (the messy ones, with the rosettes?) I've found that abys are more particular about you pat them, because generally pigs dislike being stroked against the grain of their fur, and with abys the direction of the fur changes so much that it's hard not to! My aby really only liked being patted on her nose and behind her ears.

Thank you so much. I guess I'm just a worry wart. But I just dont want a repeat of a rabbit incident. My neice found some abandonded baby rabbits once. they barely had fur they were so little...and she had them in a box with fluffy towels. Apparently they decided to EAT the towels and died. Was so sad. SO..I wanted to be sure I'm not going to have a incident where had I left the hay theyd have been fine. lol.....

Well truthfully I'm not sure what he is. I have pics on the introduction page, if that will help. I think he may be an abby, or abby cross. As he is exactly as you have described yours. He likes his nose and forhead petted, but i go beyond that or pet anything else..and he has a head bob or a squeakantrum (squeak tantrum..lol).

I am resigned to just hold him and cuddle him, as he and choco thoughrly enjoyed thier snuggle with me under a fleese blanket last night. They both went right to sleep and stayed there for a good 30 mins before they started to wiggle. I then put them back in thier cage, and rewarded them with a bannana chunk (thus far thier favorite treat i think).

I did try apple today..and they really loved it too..so I was really laughing at how choco finished his apple and then stole smores..and smores looked at him like..um I dont think so..and stole it back. I let them sort it out for the most part. But I did put an extra peice in there for in case whoever WON the tussle

well I certianly learned a lesson today. Choco was being petted and loved it...until I decided to kinda lightly scratch his back, closer to his bum...this noise emmited out of him that I had no idea what it was...and his body kinda shook a bit. I looked it up, and realise that was an annoyance rumble.
Sigh..well fine then. So..i put him back in his cage..and picked up smores..who promptly smelled the left over orange juice left on my hands from my orange treat..and BIT ME.
..>LOL.

my fault totally..but it did hurt my feelings. And to know it was because of food and not meaness helps....but stilll. so I put him back in. washed my hands super well..and then had an idea...if he likes the smell of orange juice so much..maybe he'd like some of the orange and the juice. So >>i threw in a orange slice..which both of them chomped into. Then I spooned some of the juice to them. THEY literally licked and sucked the juice off the spoon.

SO..i went from annoying them..to treating them. Can we say SPOILED much.:p..oh and anytime I open the fridge door..WHEEK..WHEEK..WHEEK... and I've been slipping them treats thru a paticular slat in thier cage..and now everytime I stand there smores comes to check out what I"m giving him..and sniffs and puts his feet up on the bars..like...ok lady.what you got now. LOL...
so demanding they are. Truly like little kids..no mommy you cant comb my hair..but can I have half your sandwhich even though ive not touched mine.
