So I’ve just noticed my neighbor has bought a new chimenea! My hutch outdoor! Also it’s coming to that time of year when people start setting bonfires and fireworks! Obviously I can manage bonfires and bring them indoors during that time, but what do I do about my next door neighbor using his chimenea randomly? Will this be enough smoke to harm my piggies? Feeling stressed about this 😩.

Any suggestions please? Xx

Wouldn't it be just the same as a bbq? or is it bigger than that?
I’m trying to find a photo now similar. It’s more smoke than a bbq, the kind where I have to close my windows because the smoke comes in (he’s previously used an old tin bin!) I’ll try and get a photo of it tomorrow! He hasn’t used it yet! This one has a much taller chimney than a cimenea which may be better, I don’t know xx

Not the best photo! If you can see his old tin bin on the left and his wheelie bin on the right to compare it to size and the chimney is slightly higher than the fence! I’m usually in at night when he starts so I can monitor it I suppose and he’s fairly approachable but how can I say “Can you not use that around my guinea pigs please?!” (Which is what I want to say! 🙊😂 lol) xx

Difficult conversation to have and probably not one that is going to go your way... he'll want to use it

Does he use it in the winter? (brave man)

Depends on the wind really, I take it your hutch is the other side of the garden from it?

Is there any possibility that you could move your hutch away from this awful thing? (I know you shouldn’t have it, but might be better for them and save possible fall out with neighbours) don’t think people realise the impact they have with these things x

Here a better photo...

Moving the hutch wouldn’t make much difference. I could put the hutch in the shed, but there’s a gap in the door and I’d worry the smoke could get in the shed. There’s no ventilation, also when the sun is out it can get quite warm! I hope he’s not planning to use both the old tin bin and the chimenea together! 🤦🏽‍♀️🙈

He burns mainly in winter, not really sure what but it smells like a proper fire rather than bbq smoke kind of smoke!

Ps should also point out that I’ve just spent £250+ on a new outdoor hutch set up for them! If I’d have known I might have reconsidered to squeezing something in, indoors but I thought outdoor gave them more room! Xx

God what a nightmare. Are they people you can talk to, if so maybe you could ask him to let you know when he’s “about to light up” and you can bring them inside. Otherwise if they are hostile perhaps you could engage help from other neighbours.

People are so inconsiderate!

You cant blame someone for having a chimney burner thing like that and he cant blame you for having guinea pigs outdoors, its just one of those situations where you get the short straw. Smoke will rise so might be ok

I can approach him and he’s ok with me. That’s an option just don’t want to be pain that he has to tell me what he’s doing all the time 😂🙈 but we will be mortified if anything happens to them! Xx

I know, it’s a difficult one! 🙈 I’m hoping the smoke will rise and the wind will blow in the other direction! I’ll try my best to bring them in xx

Yes, it’s difficult. Sometimes I think it would be lovely to live in acres of garden but then you’d have your work cut out keeping it all under control lol

I have an upstairs neighbour who like to play his music with alot of bass. I asked him once to turn it down a bit and he ended up giving me his phone number, now i just whatsapp him wenever i feel its too loud. Luckily my pigs dont really hear it. And he doesnt mind atall. We tell each other when each of us has mates round and say just message me if its too loud. Sometimes it works out talking it out. You could just cover your pigs up when hes burning it. But then again in summer it would get too hot

It’s nice when you can be like that with your neighbors! I could suggest giving him my number that would make it easier to let me know than knocking on 😊👍🏻 I’ll see how I go and take it from there! Hopefully it’s not too much of an issue but I just saw it and panicked! 🙈 xx

i totally understand the panick lol. Guinea pigs get sick even when you have done nothing to cause it, I'm sure you will find a way to stop anything from happening

I’ve only had them 4 months! They’re harder to look after than the kids! 😂 So worth it though! 💖 xx

They are pretty hard work. Ive had hamsters, rats, gerbils, rabbits, stick insects, tropical fish, a crazy springer spaniel, mice but guinea pigs are the most demanding high maintenance pets i have had. Yet so worth the stress they sometimes bring

I think chinchillas maybe worse lol i hear they suffer teeth problems alot. But the age they can live to is amazing
