Hey all, my piggie’s brother just passed away a few weeks ago, and I’m concerned about his poop. I’ve just gotten him out and noticed that it’s very smelly, slightly softer and a greeny colour. I have a photo but I’m not sure how to add it. Any advice would be great, as naturally I’m a little worried after recent events. Thanks guys!

In most cases not giving veggies for a few days will clear up soft poops as it's usually a mild tummy upset. In the meantime daily weighing is recommended instead of weekly. Is he otherwise well?

Thankyou so much for your quick reply! Ok Thankyou. He is otherwise absolutely fine, but this region does seem to be bothering him as he’s trying to clean himself.

If your house is warm enough and handling doesn't stress him out, you can give him a bum bath with some warm water.
How is he coping on his own? How old is he and are you looking into getting him a new cagemate?
Apologies for all the questions but it's quite important for him to have a companion, especially if he's young. There are a lot of informative (and interesting) links but unfortunately my tech skills are very much in the stone age so I can't attach them.
Keep an eye on the forum as someone more experienced will be along soon to welcome and advise you on everything.

How old is he as older boars can get impaction, have you checked his bottom.
There is advice on the health section about cleaning bottoms

Welcome to the Forum. I've linked a guide above you should find helpful.

I have just cleaned his bum now with warm water. Handling him does stress him out but he was ok this time- I think he knew I was trying to help him. He is coping really well considering their bond. He is running around, eating and playing as usual, showing no signs of a depressed pig. Knowing him very well, and considering his age, I wasn’t going to get him a new friend as I don’t think he’d take well to one. He is now 4 years old. What do you think?

It would be better for him to have a friend once he is well again. 4 is still quite young, he could live another 3 years or even longer, that's a long time to be alone. Perhaps you could find him a friend of a similar age. Maria's Animal Sanctuary has a lot of guinea pigs looking for new homes at the moment.

Personally, I would definitely find him a new friend. Being an older boy should hopefully mean it will be easier for him to bond.

I’m sorry to hear this.

Remove veg from his diet and increase hay intake. Ensure you increase the routine weight checks (should be done weekly throughout life but daily when you have health concerns) so you can more closely monitor his hay intake. As he is bereaved it’s possible his hay intake has reduced and caused the soft poops. If this has occurred you will see weight loss which you would need to step in to stop.
If poops don’t settle within a few days off veg, then please see a vet.

I also agree about getting him a new friend. At 4 years old he could have several more years left and it is too long for him to spend alone.
