I have been using fleece for quite a while now. I use cage blankets, one of which has fleece, wadding and another layer of fleece, and another which has fleece, wadding and toweling layer. However I am finding that they smell quite strongly (the piggies are kept in my room).

I have two ferplast 120 cages, one of which has one boar and the other has two sows. I clean them out twice a week, and I rotate around with two cage blankets for each cage. I also use vinegar in my wash. The girls tend to smell more strongly than my boar does. After a day of having the fleece in you can smell the urine.

I'm just wondering if there is anything I can do to stop the smell? I spot clean everyday. Would it be better to have seperate fleece and a layer of towels so that they wash better?

I use towels and then two layers of fleece and do not find they smell. Maybe that would work for you too?

I'm putting puppy pads underneath the fleece (buy them from poundland) and I find there's no smell. They're also in my room!

Do they tend to wee in one place? I can use fleece for a week (not that I'm TERRIBLY sensitive to smells mind you, but they're in my front room next to the sofa so I think I'd notice), and only smell urine when I literally stick my head in there to spot clean with the vac. But Machu always wees in one corner, where I put a litter tray, so I can just empty that ever couple of days. If they favour the corners I'd try litter trays or puppy pads there and you can just change those and leave the rest of the fleece.

It's not the fleece it's the toweling that holds the smell try soaking with bicarb in the water. (it works for washable baby nappies) then wash as hot as possible.

I'm experimenting with the pound land puppy pads under fleece and on top of 2 towels.

I too find the fleece gets stinky after a couple of days...

I don't think there's alot you can do ;/

Your problem would be solved if you used wood newspaper with wood shavings over the top, they remain dry and smell lush , Dittos ready for a clean out today due to faeces and generally looking a tip but he doesnt smell, if he did my OH wouldnt allow me to keep him indoors. I imagine fleece to smell and i cant help but think of leaving a child on a bed after theyve wet it.. Just my opinion though folks!

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Sorry Lil-Ninnibig but i HATE woodshavings. The girls used to be on them and they got everywhere. They also dried out their skin and I've heard of people having problems with fungal infections on woodshavings

Fleece isn't like leaving a child on a bed after they've wet it because the fleece remains dry. The wee goes through it.

I don't find my boys too bad as long as they are cleaned every third day, so twice a week. If I left them for a week they'd hum ding..

I also found this with shavings - they got kicked/dragged everywhere, cleaning up was a nightmare, not only did i have to clean the cage out, i had to hoover my whole house several times a day! I also found that my house smelt like a pet shop all the time - not a pleasant smell as it was quite over-powering....

In addition to this was when i got long-haired pigs - the shavings got caught in their hair - lots of tangles and knots to be cut out on a regular basis (like every few days) :)>>>

I agree, mine were on shavings when I first got them and it was a nightmare and it would take forever to de-poop. My set up is a layer of newspaper and 2 layers of fleece and that seems to work fine. I find the litter trays smell before the fleece so I clean them out more regularly. I used puppy pads before too which worked really well or I know some people use waterproof mattress protectors. I did find when I had towels underneath the fleece it smelt a lot worse and the towels were always soaked, so that put me off using them.

Wash your fleece at 60 or 90 C from time to time - that gets rid of the bacteria build up and the smell in the fleece itself.

Thanks guys.

I was just wondering where do you get puppy pads from? And are they expensive? I know they sell them at p@h but I'm guessing you can get them cheaper elsewhere

i dont use puppy pads - but i'm sure i read people were getting them from poundland.... I know poundstretcher do them (dont know how much they are though)
