Small red abrasion on Elizabeth’s foot. Worried it’s not the start of bumble foot 😞

Elizabeth doesn’t move around as much anymore we think due to her very large fatty lipoma on her leg / hip. She sometimes sits in her urine in which I clean her up but she’s been dry for the last few weeks.

I’ve just checked her feet and she has a tiny red abrasion on her back foot. I’m really panicking that it’s the start of bumble foot 😞 what can I do?

I’d just make sure she’s nice and clean and dry and keep an eye on it for now.

But if the skin is broken then I’d get it looked at.

Thank you. I don’t think the skin is broken. There’s just a little dimple? she’s thankfully been dry for the last few weeks x

Have you got vetbed Claire? It really helps keep the oldies dry. When I had a boar with red feet I put a newspaper under the vetbed which I changed several times a day to make sure the vetbed stayed dry on top.
Thank you. Sadly hub isn’t keen on me buying vet bed and putting large amounts of it in the washing machine 😞 but I may look at ordering some off cuts x

When Winifred got bumblefoot (which unlike you I didn't notice until it had formed scabs which then pulled up and bled 😪) the vet told me check and wipe them daily, and to apply F10 barrier cream.

It's easy to cut into pee pad sizes and is not a problem to wash. It makes a huge difference when they stop moving so much and sit in their pee.

I’m sorry that Winifred got bumble foot 😞 What did you wipe her feet with? Just plain water? I’ve been using unscented baby wipes x

I think I used saline when I first saw it, then plain water. @PigglePuggle recommended CLX wipes so I bought some of those, but they are expensive.

But as Elizabeth doesn't have an open sore on her foot, I should think baby wipes are perfectly sufficient.

If your husband isn't keen on them in the washing machine, you can buy a pet washing bag to put them in before they go in, stops nasty bits going in the washing machine.
We always use one! 😊

Washing bags are great - after a wash of our machine you'd never know, we've never found hay or anything on our clothes 😊 For peace of mind I do one hot wash after doing the pig stuff with a bit of laundry antibacterial stuff in the fabcon tray.

When Pretty Patsy had bumblefoot I used vet bed with fleece underneath. I washed it everyday in a washbag in the washing machine. I told her and her friends Meg and Christian that they were spoilt living on shagpile carpet! 😂 Vetbed is great stuff and it dries really quickly too. I was told to use F10 barrier cream on her feet by the vet as well as giving saline baths twice a day. I gave her 10 minutes in the salt bath and then 5 minutes in clean water to help get the salt off her feet, then dried her feet, applied the barrier cream (while wearing gloves) and popped her back with her friends. I bribed her with food so that she would stay still for 15 minutes and gave her lots of praise

I hope Elizabeth's foot clears up.

If the skin isnt broken, it isn't bumblefoot yet, just mild urine scald- check with the vet if unsure, but often a bit of mild redness is picked up by diligent piggy parents long before it reaches the bumblefoot stage.
Lavender the big purple fatty is quite prone to a bit of mild urine scald, and although I have used CLX paw wipes on other piggies, the antiseptic smell upsets her rather too much! So I just wipe her paws with nivea sensitive skin ladies face wipes, then pop on a bit of bepanthen nappy cream- bepanthen cream is aimed more at elderly hooman incontinence patients with very delicate skin and limited mobility to prevent pressure sores, and it works a treat on red wee feet for the elderly, less mobile, or slightly heavier piggy patients :)

You could also use a pillow case knotted at the top as it would only be small pieces.

vet bed is great, keeps them lovely and warm too. Hope Elizabeth is ok Claire x

It’s good that you’ve caught the reddened foot so promptly.
Hoping it doesn’t become bumblefoot

Thank you so much for the advise and well wishes 🙂 I do have some washbags but they’re only small enough to fit two fleeces in at a time (I use fleeces for my piggies to sit on on the settee when they come out for lap time) Sadly, using large pieces of vet bed isn’t an option as I struggled enough when I trialed fleece but I’ll definitely buy some off cuts.

I have looked at her feet again this evening and I think it’s just a bit of mild urine scald as her feet look much better after I gave them a clean last night 🙂 I think I was just panicking as both my girls are causing me worry so I’m picking at everything 😞

I already have bebanthem from when I had my latest tattoo so I will apply some of that to her feet 🙂 I’ll also buy some of the Nivea wipes x

I think the abrasion has disappeared but her feet are caked in poo 😞 what’s the best way to clean her feet? I’ve used a baby wipe but I don’t want to cause any irritation and sores by rubbing her feet 😞

I'm glad the red patch has gone.
If she were mine I'd wipe off with warm water on a soft cloth/cotton wool pad. If it's dried on and hard to get off I'd stand her in shallow water that just covers her feet and soak it before wiping off.
Has one of them got soft poop or has she been sitting in her poop and had a wee?

Thank you. I’ll try what you’ve suggested. No they haven’t got soft poo, it’s were she’s sitting in her poo and wee 😞 x
