Hi! I have two boars (Patches and Carmal). Recently I’ve taken them to the vet because of their soft stool. They gave me some medicine to put them on. They’ve hadn’t had veggies in a month. This is because they had soft stool and I wanted it to firm up. The medicine seems to be helping. Please no judging what I’m about to say. I took Carmal (the younger one) out for his medication. Once I finished, I walked back over to the cage. I had him in my lap. While opening the cage my hand slipped and I dropped the door on him. He seems fine. I felt around his body and he didn’t give any notices of pain. Patches weighs 2 pounds and Carmal 1 pound and 6 ounces. This was their weight when I first started weighing them. The medication will be done on the 12th I believe. They’ve stopped eating pellets. They still eat hay and drink water though. Should I put them back on veggies? Or wait until the medication is over? The poops were most smaller than before. Please no rude comments I know I messed up.:soz:

Thank you in advance!

I'm not sure on the veggie question. But be careful with the vit c.. Make sure they are getting enough, you don't want scurvy setting in. Maybe a supplement of vit c for guine apig will be good

Personally I would wait until the piggies have finished their medication until you put them back on their veggie diet. They've already gone a month so another week or so isn't going to hurt. Also when they do start eating veg again I would start introducing different types to them gradually as if it was the 1st time they've had it and see how they go with that. Don't feel bad about what happened to carmal. It was only an accident. My ex was holding my piggy a while back and when putting him back in his cage dexter jumped and bashed his head and face on the way in. He was fine and unfortunately these things happen. I wasn't amused at the time because he should have had a firmer grip but it happened and that's all there is to it.

It isn't a good idea to take all veg away even if the droppings are soft, they need green leafy food and grass, you just need to be careful which veg you give, did your vet suggest you withdraw all veg? They should really have advised you. Glad to hear the meds are helping, the droppings will be small if the diet isn't correct. Glad your piggy wasn't hurt after the accident but these things happen no matter how careful we are.

It's quite common advice to remove all veg if poops go soft as it indicates a slight tummy upset and we recommend that veg is removed until 24-48 hours after poops have returned to normal. Pellets are fortified with nutrients and vitamin c and hay makes up 80% of the diet

Ok thanks! I will certainly get some veggies while I’m out today. I believe I may have gotten a new cage today but I’m not sure. I will resume veggies right away!image.webpHeres a picture of their poops.

Does anyone have any suggestions on good veggies for them to eat that wouldn’t cause soft stool? I’ll definitely feed them red bell peppers and red/green leaf lettuce.

Maybe give your vet a call and see what they suggest about giving vegetables. I'd be worried about giving them anything while they're still not quite right.

Some pellets don't have very high vit c. I know Harringtons doesn't compared to burgess, and depending on how you store the pellets will make a difference

Should I start them back on veggies today? I’m tempted to do it. Right now they only eat hay, since they don’t eat the pellets. They still drink plenty of water.

Have you thought about trying them on critical care and see if they will eat it from a bowl. That should sort out any issues it's packed with vit c and fiber

As far as I can see from the photo the droppings don't look soft, they look dry and small, what medication are they on and for how long? If both piggies have the same problem then I would suggest you look at their diet before you stopped the veg a month ago. If they were mine I would start reintroducing something like Spring greens but it would be a good idea if you are worried to have a word with your vet before doing so.

I’m thinking that their poops are small because of the reduced food intake. They have no problem with eating hay they just don’t seem to like the pellets. I’ve heard some other people had similar problems. They are still healthy and active. I know some people cut out pellets all together! I think adding veggies to their diets might really help! I just wanted to check in with you guys before I did something rash. The vet said that it was ok to start them on veggies right away. I’m thinking of introducing lettuce and red bell pepper first and then going from there.

I would always go by what your vet says and if they say it's safe then I would do it. Just try 1 veg at a time and maybe you can work out what gave them their soft poos in the 1st place
