Hello,
I noticed a hard small lump on my 3 year old board jaw. It’s in the inside of his mouth rather than the outside. It's not causing him any pain and he’s still very interested in his food. Any idea what this could be?
We’re going to take him to the vets but just intrigued

It could be a tooth root abscess given its location or it could be something entirely different. I’d keep a close eye on him and weigh him daily to make sure he’s eating enough hay. Good luck at the vets x

Thank you - it’s good to have an idea.
He’s an indoor pig so he’s easy to monitor but I will certainly keep an eye on him x

Just had a little feel and it seems like it’s on the skin on the inside of his lip - so I’m hoping just a little spot or something but I’ll still take him to the vets to be on the safe side

Hi

Unfortunately only a hands-on vet examination can tell. It could be the very start of a dental root abscess.

Good luck at the vets. I hope it’s something easily sorted. 🤞🏻

Thank you all. I’ll call tomorrow and see if I can get him seen to soon and I’ll keep you all posted

Can I just ask… if it is early stage dental root abscess what is involved? I’m hoping it’s all treatable if we have found something early

I have experience of a piggy with a tooth root abscess. The first signs I noticed were 100g weight loss in a week and slanted front teeth. The lump didn’t appear for about two weeks. See what the vet says. It may be something else.

Heres Peppers thread if you’d like a read.

Dental? Pepper is off to the vets tomorrow

Keep us posted what the vet says.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’ll check out the link.
I’m hoping it’s something else. I just had to put my other guinea pig to sleep less than a month ago - I just hope it’s all treatable

I’m so sorry for your loss. Sending you a hug and healing vibes to your piggy. ❤️

Great news. I took Solomon to the vets they had a look at his lump - it was a little hard for them to look properly because he’s a wriggly little thing but they confirmed it was not connected to the tooth root and highly unlikely to be an abscess. They’ve asked me to monitor it over the next few weeks and if it grows we can easily remove it. They think it’s a small cyst that’s formed from a hair follicle.

Aw that’s brilliant news. Fingers crossed it doesn’t grow but it’s great it’s just a little harmless cyst x
