Hi All
I'm not best pleased to see a horrid slug trail on the back wall on the inside of my hit h this morning and with me doing a full clean yesterday.
I know this is probably what Is normal but I really didn't like it and wondered what I can do to reduce this. I have a rain cover which is used every night.
Thanks
Vickie

Put them in your hair.. Lol! I know its disgusting, but I have quite the story involving slugs and hutches. After reaching in to retrieve a piggy one day after a particularly rainy night, I noticed something cold and wet on my neck.. A slug had gotten lodged in my hair after I reached into the hutch. Needless to say, my mum suddenly received a surprised piggy as I deposited him safely on her lap before proceeding to scream, remove the slug, cry on the floor and then run myself a massive bath, as well as cutting off a few particularly tangled strands for good measure- how gross! We have thousands of these all over our hutch, as well as slug feces and slugs themselves lodged into the hutch every time it rains.. Horrid! Obviously you cant put poison down near your pigs, and I wouldn't do it anyway considering I don't like to kill innocent creatures no matter how peculiar or disgusting, and no matter where they are, including my hair! Because of this, all I ever do is disinfect the hutch as best I can and take out any slugs by hand (or by hair) with gloves on of course, as they can carry worms. I'll be interested to see any kind of suggestions however!

I wouldn't be happy either, wouldn't have a clue what to do as you can't spray or use powder. The only thing I thought of is to get some log roll like you put on flower beds. Or the rigid plastic then you put shiney tape on it which deters ants etc. Whether it would stop slugs & snails I don't know. Put it on both sides of the wood

Omg in your hair yuk....

Yep I have disinfected the area. But not found the culprit.

I just don't like them..

You're lucky then, he probably slithered in and then slithered out instead of deciding to stay for the night! The logs sound like a good idea, I'll do a bit of research c;

Wouldn't really work with rain but for decent weather you could sprinkle salt all around the outside of the hutch.

ive used salt and that seems to have deterred them entering into hutch, remove all old veg each day ,ive read to place small cup of beer s slugges love it !but not sure of saftey of your cavies, maybe place outside of hutch.

This makes them too intoxicated to scale the hutch? Drunken slugs!

ohhh that's just reminded of the slug trap that was easy to make. Cut a large (bigger than 750ml) coke bottle about 2/3rd's of the way up. Unscrew the lid and turn it upside down and put inside the bottle. Pour cider into the bottom, not too full but enough to tempt the slugs in. Slugs get in and get too drunk to get back out and drown instead.

Hubby says forget the log roll, that shiney tape is called slug tape, & put it around the hutch, even inside the door openings. Make sure the piggies can't get at it. It's made by the same people as do the pellets, but as its away from the piggies it will be fine.
Mind you the booze one sounds better, just drink the booze down, till the remainder fits in the cap. That way you don't waste any. You will proberly have to do it daily through, such a chore.
Don't tell the mods about the booze though.

:lol!:

Don't think I'd let the slugs drown; but catching them and letting them get too drunk to escape before releasing them somewhere more slug-friendly sounds like a good idea [they'd probably enjoy it lol] but it's such a chore I don't think I'd be able to keep up. Trying out the salt idea, though!

Too funny lmao x

Copper tape is supposed to stop them. Could put it around all the legs of the hutch
