Hi there, I’m just looking for a bit of advice with my guinea pigs in particular my Abyssinian Boris. I usually weigh them both weekly but slacked and missed out 3 weeks. Both their weights dipped slightly in mid Feb, Boris by around 40g and then went back up to 1205 for a couple of weeks. I weighed him mid March and he was 1230 which isn’t unusually high for him but had the 3 week break and his weight has dropped to 1160. In that space of time I installed a shallow ramp which both piggies have enjoyed running up and down and I have also noticed my other pig Winston’s weight drop from 1085 to 1050. So both pigs weight has dropped below what is ‘normal’ for them and they haven’t been this low since they were still growing into adults. Is the weight loss something I should worry about or could it be due to the fact they have a new ramp so are getting more exercise in and their environment has changed? I have been weighing them both daily the last 3 days and they have remained roughly at 1160 and 1050. It is worth noting that their behaviour has not changed and they’re both their happy, good loving selves.

Given the weight loss is over a three week period (less than 50g) then I wouldn’t worry. I would, however, continue to weigh them once daily for now just to see what their weight is doing. If they are losing every day then it would be advisable to have them checked out by the vet, just to be on the safe side.

Has there been any change in their diet? And how old are they?

They are just over 2 years old. Thank you for your reply, do you think it could just be a new normal for them because of the ramp being added? I'm so annoyed at.myself for not weighing every week like I normally do!

Sorry and there’s been no other changes in their diet or anything else

This guide is always a helpful read no matter how long you have owned pigs - Weight - Monitoring and Management

As said above that is okay for that period of time but it may be good to keep an eye.
I also have a winston! Weight can fluctuate by around 30-40g if they have had a big breakfast or just have not done a pee yet, so please do not worry to much.

Aww a fellow Winston! Thank you for the reassurance, think it just scared me because they’ve never weighed that low but maybe it’s just a new normal for them as they have both lost weight if that makes sense
