Okay, so they are cute and all but really, a Guinea Pig should have fur am I right? They also have so many special needs and should be just bred and sold to make money and I'm positive that's what people are doing.

I have just come across a website where they are breeding Skinnies.. and OMG
They have like 80 I swear. and from the looks of their litter pictures all their sows are having 4-6 babies. They are being sold for get this.... 135 dollars a piece! OMG This is just insane.

I'm not sure if it's okay to post the website but I will and if any of the Moderators or Administrators they need to remove it please do so and I will not be offended and I'm sorry if I broke any rules by posting it but this is just an insane amount of breeding going on and this is just ?/
<Link deleted> please do not link to breeders websites. - thanks

That's a matter of opinion...I agree about the breeding, but plenty of other species need special care. I like a piggie with fur, but I know several people who have skinnies who adore them and take excellent care of them, and they're pretty darn cute. rolleyes

I love them as well and think they're adorable but to breed and sell them got 150 it's just silly and those people can't possibly care about the welfare of their animals to be breeding them so much.

Hi, it's interesting to look at the link. It was good insight into how this one breeder works. I'm personally pretty unimnformed of that area. It's hard for me to imagine shipping a pig alone on a plane!

Skinny's are lovely piggies but yeah, they do need a lot more care. Willow proves that often!

There's a skinny pig breeder near the rescue I adopted Willow from, and as a result, that rescue is overrun with skinny's! They normally stay as permanent residents, but there wasn't enough room for Willow, so she went to me.

These people buy the skinny's from the breeder and either get sick of them, or don't know anything about their extra care. Willow still shows signs of being neglected by one of these owners. Even though she's quite a chunky pig, you can still see her ribs and spine very clearly, and that will never go away.

Somebody bought her and didn't know what they were doing. Thankfully she ended up in rescue, as opposed to dying in a little cage somewhere.

And unfortunately a majority of people who breed guinea pigs, or any animal for that matter don't really care about the welfare of the animals. They just want the money. Which is why it's better to get from a rescue and not support the breeders.

There are reasons why skinny's have such a high price...one of them is to keep them out of the hands of 'fad' buyers, and to put people off. Unfortunately there are, and will always be a MINORITY of people of who see $$$$$/£££££'s

I personally arnt keen on skinnys, to me they just dont look right, and kinda freak me out! But everyone to there own. Personally and please no one take offence, but I just dont think its right, its like when they showed on telly the fact they had bred chickens with no feathers, its human intervention in an unnatural way, same with hairless dogs and cats yeah ok they are great for people who want pets and are allergic to fur, but still just seems unnatural and wrong in some way. Mind you nearlly all the animals people own nowdays are all bred through human intervention but hairless animals just doesnt seem right, when I see them I just want to knit them I fur jacket!

i was just about post a thread about skinny pigs.i think they are lovely.what extra care do they need?do they ever pop up in rescues?

The biggest problem I have with the existence of this breed is that the pigs themselves would not choose to be bald. It is only down to the choices of humans that they have to endure this abnormality.

We see on a daily basis pigs that are neglected and suffering due to people's ingnorance, the hairless pigs are far more vulnerable and when in the wrong hands they suffer to a greater extent.

Our pigs are so special because of their personalities, these pigs would be just as fabulous if they had their coat on.

I dont know the breed personally, but I'm sure they wouldnt choose to be hairless. Poor hairless piggies - do you you have to pop them in little coats? serious question honestly.

I wrap Willow in a fleece blanket when she gets cold. It's no substitute for hair, but it warms her up.

I didn't mean to step on any ones toes about Skinnies really. I was just so shocked that they had so many and the price of them is outrageous but I do see how that would keep them away from people who don't know anything about them etc. HairlessWillow your girl is just beautiful and I have become a very big fan of her and like I said before, I have no problems with the Skinny breed, I just think piggies need hair :)

The link has been deleted but it would have been very interesting to have a look at them...

Thank you Mercedes :) Yes, I agree piggies should have hair. I think Willow would be happier with it.
