hi! was researching online about gps on spare time and started reading about skinnies
i was wondering how they got along with other regular guinea pigs? also other than the normal standard guinea care is there anything extra that needs to be done for them and their homes?

Skinnies can live with normal piggies, but they have special needs, as their bare skin needs extra care. They have also got an even higher metabolism, which means that they eat, poop and pee more and have a shorter lifespan.

Sadly, skinnies have become very fashionable since they got out of tight breeding circles a few years ago and are currently bred like mad for the sake of making a quick buck out of people's fascination. :(

here is more information:

I've not seen them bred anymore than furred piggies, myself. Personally, I know less who focus on skinnies than I do on the furred varieties.

i never support breeders but i will admit i browse online and look at all sorts of things including their sites and available piggies to pass time or just to see some cute piggies, there's a lady in CA who breeds skinnies and ships them all over the world that made me so sad, how do they eat? how do they even live in a crate that's so tormenting

Skinny pigs are turning up in British rescues more and more in the wake of them being sold so widely, but most good rescues are very careful who they rehome them to to make sure that they are properly cared for and not used for breeding. We have got a few members with skinnies (some of them actually rescue skinnies).

It is sad to see what lenghts some people go to. :(

Mine live with abys - Phoebe with Mabel and Katie with Little Rose.

I make sure they have lots of warm fleecy cozies to snuggle in and that stalky hay is only used in hay bags etc and not for bedding. Mine are kept on fleece and Vetbed. They can be very sensitive and I moisturize their skin weekly with a Humilac spray which is sold in vets and doesn't block their pores.

it really is . they're very darling and look like baby hippos ((:
there are no rescues and especially with skinnies. wouldn't go to that length , just wish there was a rescue near me i would love to volunteer

My 2 came from a rescue but like Wiebke says she was very particular about who she rehomed them to, she knew us as we had adopted from her a few times.

do they have the same sort of behavior as your other guineas? of course they're all different but the basic actions

They are a lot more highly strung and I call them my divas. They are also first to wheek for food and will not share cozies.
