Hi,

I have a three month old hairless guinea pig. He has been itching and biting himself very frequently and has one major spot where I believe he scratched raw that has now began to heal, but it is dry and flaky. First I thought he had mange mites, but after being given a topical dose of Revolution from the vet, he hasn't had any improvement in the itching or biting. I'm not sure if maybe he has irritated skin, ringworm beginning, or if I possibly just need to wait longer for the Revolution to kick in. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!IMG_8351.jpgIMG_8352.webp

Has the vet found any mites under the microscopes? Usually with spot in treatments they need 3 rounds of treatment to be fully clear. I would want them to check for fungal too.

My vet didn't have any time to physically see him to determine his case, which bothered me, but as I described it to her she gave me two doses of revolution and I have finished that but have now noticed him scratching at his face and biting his back and legs.

You need to take him back and the vet needs to actually look at him. Try and get him an appointment.

Update: so I took him to a different vet that had availability. She said she couldn’t tell whether or not it was mites or fungal without a fungal test that would take 3 weeks to get results for. She gave him an ivermectin shot in case of mites, and gave me an antifungal shampoo to use in case of fungus. It has been a few days since he had both, but I’m concerned because he is still biting/scratching a lot and there are quite a few patches of broken skin. At this point I’m really not sure what to do, any advice?
