for the last 4wks i have been unable to look after my guineas due to illness and a stay in hospital ( they have been cared for by friends and family) today i decided to give them all a check over and I'm mortified they all seem to have something wrong with their skin, 2 of the girls have lost a lot of their fur and have large open sores so its off to the vets tomorrow as i think they could have mites. The others have slight thinning of their fur and flakey skin so could be a fungal infection present aswell. One of the worst effected girls was itching like mad about 20 mins ago and was chewing herself and she fell onto her side, she stayed down for about 10 seconds could this have been a seizure ? or just a loss of balance. If it turns out to be mites what treatment should i be expecting the vet to suggest

Hi, if its mites i think its ivermectin they are given by injection, shampoo does nothing to cure mites so they need to see the vet about it.

have you looked on GG? www.gorgeousguineas.com if the vet doesnt give you an answer to some of the skin complaints you can email someone there and she will be able to tell you which products may help your piggies skin.

take a lookat this too, it gives good advice on treating mites http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=21881&highlight=ivermectin

hope that helps, good luck at the vets xx

thanks for your reply:) i have a good selection of gg melts, shampoos and lotions and have used the coconeem melt and the manuka and neem shampoo but they are still scratching and biting themselves to the point of bleeding they are booked into the vets so hopefully they will soon be sorted and back to their normal cheeky selves

I have heard that guineas can have seizures when mites are severe but once injected they do seem to improve realtively quickly.

just been reading that and it certainly does sound like they have mites, the worst effected girl lives with 10 others, 6 of them have slightly thinning areas of fur and are a bit flakey but the others are fine but to be on the safe side i will ask the vet for enough stuff to treat them all. Going to hold off on the shampooing untill ive been to the vets as i dont think that both treatments can be done on the same day.

took the girls to the vets and he gave them some xeno 450 so hopefully thats sorted that problem out but they are not as itchy as they were and they seem happier in themselves thanks:)

Glad to hear that things seem a little better after your visit to the vet.

I think you can also get some cream to rub in to help the flaking skin and sores ... hopefully other members can help in that direction.

Perhaps, as has been mentioned above, gorgeousguineas might have something.

i have the lotions and soothing gel from gg and the wounds have all healed now and luckily they are not biting to the point of bleeding so hopefully this problem is sorted thanks:)

I've just bought some of that online the other day to treat my guinea pigs if they get it. I got the Xeno 50 though.:)
