I own a long hair breed guinea pig, which obvious requires ALOT of attention on the hair.

Anyways I only cut her hair short when ever the hair gets so long it clumps into a big piece, and one time i found this brown looking scab,I just cut it off but never noticed anything wrong, until yesterday when I realised there's something wrong with her skin,i simply cut off almost all the hair at that area. and took a picture.

Right now i put lice spray for human hair....but i do not know what it is, how to treat it, and if it would spread to humans =(

< Taken from along time ago, just how she looks overall....

woah very gross, poor little pig. It looks like an abscess to me, so needs to be treated by the vet, by flushing it out daily with an anti biotic like baytril.

Yeah i plan on doing so after i try find out or at least give home remedies a try

I don't think its what you said, since they're not liquidy pus, but flaky looking skin that i don't even want to touch....

I know i should really bring her to the vet, but recently i just had at least 3 visits to the vet,my Dog just got SARDS(an eye degenerating disease due to age or genetics )

I'm so sad all my pets are sick =(

i would suggest going to this website http://gorgeousguineas.com/index.html and contact the owner by email and send a picture of the spots you are concerned about and she will get back to you and suggest something for you to use O0 either that or take your piggies to the vet for a check over O0 welcome to the forum from me and the girls in oz :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: good luck with your furbabies O0

Yeah I would also contact Gorgeous guineas like Choloe (mary) said....she may be able to recommend something.

Where abouts are you if you don't mind me asking....are you in the UK?

I would've said that was an abscess, but could be wrong, maybe the pus has gone hard inside ( xx0) it doesn't look like mites would've caused that, as that is not a self harm wound - it would be more random than that, and that is a perfect circle. It is not lice either. Maybe not an abscess, but some kind of lump that's been opened up by accident, one of my pigs has harmless 'fatty lumps' but of course these are not open wounds, otherwise she would be on anti biotics, which is why I mention the vet to you as these things can pick up infections easily :-\

I was going to suggest the exact same thing, Chrissie is a good person to contact about skin problems O0

I would take the piggie to the vets looks like an abcess to me the needs lanceing.

It actually looks like an abscess that's burst open. Home remedies aren't appropriate for this and your piggy will need to see a vet. It will probably require antibiotics.

this is the abcess that my Fizzi has it is now third of the size now,but had baytril and cleaned twice daily! needs to see the vet!

What a gorgeous girl! I love Shelties. Yep agree with others needs a vet for antibiotics. Hope it clears up soon, looks nasty. x

It looks like a burst sebaceous cyst to me.these are harmless but once burst could get infected. You do need to see a vet with this.
On the other hand if it is just a patch of white scurfy looking skin,it is mites.Again a vet visit is called for to get some Ivermectin, which is the only cure for mites.Home cures could just make it worse.

It does look like an abscess or cyst that has already burst open.
Does she live with any other piggy who could have bitten her? But from my experience, they don't normally get bitten that far down their back.
You obviously need to get the wound clean and advice on how best to treat it so that it doesn't get infected and more painful for her.

Yeap, the long-haired breeds can hide things alot easier than the short haired ones. Over the years I have owned by Shelties and Coronets. I still have Joey who is a tri-coloured Sheltie and Rikkyboy who is a cream and white Coronet. I love these breeds!

Keep us posted to how things go!

Can't say I have ever heard of this affecting humans and this is treatable so no good vet would put down an animal that can be treated.

But when it comes down to putting to sleep that final decision rests with the owner and not with the vet.

Good luck with her. :)

If you are worried about it being transferrable to humans, perhaps you should wear disposable gloves when handling her just as a precaution until you get to the vet.
I buy mine from Asda ... £1 for about 10 pairs.

no I wouldn't say that is transferable to humans. You might not want to touch the actual wound with bare hands though, through preference, or because hands could transmit bacteria into the wound.

I wouldn't ever put down a pig for a skin condition, they can always be treated and it depends how well the pig responds to treatment after that. Usually they respond well.

Put a gp down for a skin condition grrrr!.No way.

The only skin condition that a gp can pass on to a humans is ringworm, and this is not what your pig has.I still think it is a burst cyst and it will not harm you.
