Hello, I've had Beemo for around 3 months now. As far as I am aware he is 2 years old, however he is very big. After viewing piggies around his age I'd say he is more than double the size of them. I've had him checked at 2 different vets and they have both said he is perfectly healthy and a good weight. Does anyone know why he is so big? I've attached some pictures of him to give an idea of his size, but I'm not sure if they fully convey his size properly. The pictures are him playing on my bed (He likes to play on my bed with supervision while I clean his cage) and my sister holding him (For reference she is 5 foot 8 inches). Also - just in case there are concerns of him being a solo piggie, he is currently recovering from being neutered and I am looking into getting friends for him :)

Its most likely just his genetics.

Does he have a good heft? That is your indicator of what is healthy for his body - this guide explains how to check heft Weight - Monitoring and Management
Weight isn’t an indicator of what is healthy for his own body type, but is his weight stable at each of your weekly weight checks?

How long ago was he neutered?

Hiya, thank you for the guide. I will look through it immediately :) His weight is consistent. He was neutered 6 weeks ago (Will be 7 weeks on Monday).

As long as is his heft is fine for himself, then he is just a big boy!

At 6 weeks post neuter he is now safe to be bonded with sows

Hi

You feel around the ribcage whether a piggy is a good weight for their size or not; this gives you an idea of the BMI and in which kind of weight ball park your piggy should be playing. The weekly weigh-in then monitors whether your boy is eating enough and has no developing underlying issues.

The actual body size in guinea pigs can vary much more than people expect. My big Pioden was borderline underweight at 1500g and could have comfortably packed another 100-200g without being overweight but I have also had piggies who were slighly overweight just crossing the 800g line in their prime - and both extremes lived to 8 years of age.
If your boy is over 2 kg and not overweight, then there is a chance that he could have some cuy (a modern genetically engineered meat breed in his makeup); because cuys have some with wild guinea pig genes (domestic and wild piggies do not interbreed naturally), then can often be much more skittish, especially when not socialised with humans from birth.

Our weight guide explains in detail how you feel for the heft, what you need to exactly look for and what you can do in case of overweight: Weight - Monitoring and Management

He’s beautiful 😍 My late Erika weighed in at 1500g in her prime and was as big as your boy but her heft was good and the vet said there was nothing wrong with her weight

Like humans, piggies come in different shapes and sizes

He’s gorgeous!
My Loki was 1600g at his heaviest but not over weight. Definitely genetics. I have boars that range from 950g to 1300g at the moment 🥰
