hi, i am amanda and i am new to the guinea pig forum, i have had pigs in the past but i dont have any pigs at the moment( i am hopfully picking up 2 female shelties tonight )
i have been looking through the posts and read about singing pigs the other day and today i have got a book about guinea pigs called the complete guide to guinea pig care iopaedia and it says in there

"no one knows why a guinea pig may sing but what is certain is the effect a singing pig has on others in the cage; PURE TERROR the other pigs will rush around trying to hide from the strange sound, they will start ahuddering and food will be ignored. it is advisable to remove the singing pig from a shared cage until it has stopped its song."

i thought a guinea singing meant it was very happy!
has anyone whos pig has sang noticed anything like this?
 
You have to double check books....from experience I have found much information is either outdated or dare I say, incorrect.

I have a book that says "Yawning doesn't mean that the animal is tired. It's how one guinea pig admits defeat to another after a fight." I have a lone boar that loves his cuddles. When my brother holds him at night he lays on his chest he yawns several times and then lays his head down to nap. :)) He's lost no fight and he's perfectly happy. mallethead
 
A singing piggy is quite an amazing sound and it may be that it startles the companions - however, I haven't noticed any terror!

Nope when Iggy did it last night my other two piggies (who don't share a cage with her but are very near her) were absolutely fine. I think Nemo who has the cage above hers just thinks 'she's off again'..:)) His favourite noise is the fridge opening.rolleyes
 
My Kim sang for about a minute a while back.It did sound just like a bird singing,and was absolutely amazing.I felt priviledged to hear it.She has never done it since,and her sister Katie has never done it.
While she was singing,Katie looked astounded,not exactly frightened,more"what's up with her ?":)

when boars square up to fight, they can "yawn", as in open their mouths so it looks like yawning.
 
my tilly sings and she is in with dolly and gypsy and they dont even flinch when she begins her song! they just carry on eating popcorning or whatever they are doing at the time!
in fact i have 8 guineas in total and none of them pay any attention to what shes doing! x x however it rarely lasts more than 1 or 2 minuites so maybe its not long enough to fill them with terror lol!
 
Some people think it's used to alert the other pigs in the group of something, i've heard of a few doing it when one pig near has died/is dying. But most seem to be for no apparent reason lol! Maybe they want to alert their mates that they're really happy :)) maybe some pigs would act scared because they don't know what they're being alerted for?! I'm making no sense today this heat is getting to me! x
