Hi All,

I made a post on pet forums about this and was advised to ask around here to help shed some light on my piggie's situation. I have a boar called Theo who was bleeding when he urinated. I took him to the vets who said he had a penis infection and said that I should give him baytril and metacam, and wash the area with hibiscrub all twice a day then return in a week. He stopped bleeding but there was still a thick white discharge (not boar glue or sperm rods) on the area. I was told to keep using the baytril twice a day for another week and hibiscrub once a week. I then returned again a week and a half later and was given isaderm cream to put on the area and wash with hibisrub and no more oral meds. We then returned again and Theo is now on baytril, hibiscrub and isaderm all twice a day. He's still got the discharge. The vet dismissed the idea of bladder stones, Theo also wee'd quite a lot while we were at the vets (he is a nervous wee-er) but I was wondering if he might have diabetes as suggested by someone else on petforums. I was hoping that someone could shed some light on his situation if they have gone through the same or something similar and could offer some advice because he's really getting stressed out when it comes to medicine time :(. We do have another vet I can take him too who is a bit more specialised but he gets stressed when we take him.

Background info: Theo is a ginger/tan brown Abyssinian Guinea pig he is 2yrs and 10mnths old he weighs about 1.35kg and has a brother who is separated while he is ill.

The white " discharge " you are referring to - is it in his wee - or coming from his penis ?

it's on the shaft of his penis under the foreskin the wee is normal a pale yellow cloudy wee

Thank you so much this is really helpful! Is the Smegma normal? because this sounds like what he might have and it doesn't seem to cause him any problems its not a thick coating of discharge like when he was bleeding and it's not stopping any normal bodily functions. I researched this before he had the infection because he had this when he was a bit younder and some sites say its normal but others say that there should not be any discharge on the shaft at all...When I posted on petforums one of the posters said that their daughter had boars and none of them had this on their bits. The vet also checked the young boars that where in their care and said there was no discharge on them and Theo having the discharge wasn't normal, but I thought that might be because their boys haven't matured they were still pups.

It could be a calcium "sludge" build up around his penis. I had a boar with bladder issues including a few stones and I had to clean his almost daily to remove the buildup.

Why did the vet dismiss bladder stones? Was he xrayed to rule them out?

@Jaycey @PiggyOwner Hi guys apologies for the VERY late reply we've just been really busy atm! So the vet took him off Baytril and asked for Isaderm only. He had his check up and all seemed fine for about a month or so and this morning he just wouldn't stop bleeding when he wee'd. I took him straight to Blue Cross ( low on funds at the moment :soz:) He no longer has the discharge or puss around his area I've been checking so I'm not sure what it was and it probably was calcium sludge as suggested by @Jaycey. He was not given an x-ray at he previous vets because apparently it didn't seem like that was the case but Blue Cross wanted to do one straight away. Thankfully he has no bladder stones and they also tested his urine for diabetes - he doesn't have that either :yahoo:. But no one can figure out whats wrong with him so he's back on the Baytril at a higher dose and will be seen again next Wed to see how he's getting along.

To be honest whenever he's given the medication the bloody urine seems to disappear and then when he's been off the medication for a week or so it comes back and I'm not sure what's going on with him because I can't find any details about it apart from bladder stones which has now been ruled out. In any case I just want to thank you on your help with Theo so far it really means a lot and hopefully he will get better soon!

Oh almost forgot to add hes gone from 1.34kg to 1.2 since his last weigh in about 2 months ago,

R - x

No probs :D

we've had our second visit and it's looking up! So Theo had an ultrasound and they managed to pick up a bladder stone it's quite big! They said they couldn't see it on the x-ray because it was hiding. They're going to perform surgery today :D and hopefully we'll have him back tomorrow and he'll be on the road to recovery!

Thanks again and I'll let you know how he is when he's home!

I hope he recovers well - good luck Theo :)

Thanks for the update, best wishes for the surgery,
My vet recommends giving a pig plenty of watery veg like cucumber few hour's (6 to 8 hours )before the surgery, this will hydrate the pig!
As general anesthetics dehydrat the body

@flowerfairy Thank you so much! He's just come out of surgery about an hour ago they're waiting for him to eat something and then he'll be on his way home tomorrow :D :D Thank you so much for the support and help guys! We got there in the end :D
