Hi

My vet advised me against using sawdust due to one of my piggies having a chest infection when i bought him. He ended up on 3 courses of antibiotics in the first 7 weeks we has him.

My vet advised that we use a lot of news paper at the bottom of the cage and then loads of bedding hay over the news paper.

2 of my friends at work bring in thier news papers for me . We have been doing this the last 8 months

At the moment i use approx 7 newspapers at the bottom of thier cage then loads of bedding hay. There has been no problems to date.

The question is = At work we have a lot of shredded paper available. Could i also use this for thier bedding.

I don't know if it would be too dusty for my piggies and i would not want them to get chesty again.

But i was thinking that this would make the bottom of cage more softer for them.

Any suggestions

Thanks for replying to my post

The 2 girls who bring the paper in for me are leaving work at the same time.
They have said they still do not mind keeping thier papers for me and i can go and collect them weekly from thier houses. This is not a problem for me as they live close and i have a car.

It was just a thought i had about the shredded paper in case the paper keeping becomes a chore for them as they will no longer be in work.

I may start to collect the shredded paper in work. Work will be pleased as it costs a fortune for a company to come in and collect it.

My piggies will be happy lol

i get my shreded paper from work too, is a great free bedding! But just make sure that nobody shreds paper clips/staples cos piggies munch everything and a piece of shredded paper clip wouldnt be too good for their insides i dont think!

I use shredded paper when I'm absolutely desperate, but I've found it isn't absorbent at all and it can be quite dusty. You also need to use a lot of it to cover a hutch. Newspaper is definitely the best.

I tried shredded paper until my shredder packed up after a couple of weeks! Mine loved to hide in it when it was all mixed up with long strandy (I know that's not a word really) bale hay. It did go soggy pretty quickly though.

I gave shredder paper to my boys for the first time a few weeks back, when they were out for floor time and they loved it! Joey even made a little cosy bed out of it and hogged it to himself. :))

I dont see anything wrong with using it as a bedding, but just be careful that when they wee on it the dye isnt on their fur and dont mistake red dye for blood, like i did! I then noticed that one piece of the paper had some red felt on and that was the culprit!

:)

I use the best of both worlds, shredded newspaper! It's what my share horse lives on and it fantastic, it's so absorbant, I love it.

Dodge, my recently neutered little lad, was very sneezy on shavings, soon as I switched to this he sneezes no more than any other piggie, I've since put all mine onto it.

I used to use newspaper on the bottom of my hutches. One of my first guinea pigs Boogie sufficated when he burried himself under the newspaper, in the summer. :0 I never used newspaper after that. I use vetbedding if i have a poorly piggy.
