Should I use Nizoral too?

Hello

I hope you can advise me. My guinea pigs have been scratching a lot lately. I have 2 together and 3 new ones in quarantine as I recently adopted them from a shelter. They haven't been in contact with the other 2 but they are housed in the same room (as I have no where else to put them at the moment until we move house).

I called the vet and explained everything. Because it's covid she said she didn't need to see them but suggested using xeno 450 on all of them, which I have just ordered online. My question is this; should I Nizoral them all too so that I can be sure there's no fungal issues too (since she hasn't seen them)?

I know there are fungal piggies at the shelter that the new ones came from because I help out there once a week, although we wear PPE and do lots of cleaning. What would you do? Thank you

It is a real shame that a vet would give advice on treating without seeing piggies. Without hands on examination they cannot realistically diagnose what the condition is.

Really I would not recommend mixing treatments. Either the problem is mites, you treat with Xeno and it cures them. Or it is fungal, in which case you need to follow the treatment set out in our comprehensive guide. Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

We do not recommend Nizoral for the piggies - it is for the humans to shower in to help prevent spread of fungal to the humans, rather than for use on the piggies.

But really, what I want to say is that you need to book a vet appointment. Despite Covid, Vets are still seeing piggies and should do so. It is not acceptable for a vet to diagnose over the phone and to tell you to buy treatments over the counter.

She did see him one month ago when he had a tumor removed and she gave him a full health check at the time so idk if that has any bearing on her decision. There aren't any signs of fungal and I was asked the symptoms on the phone and she has seen photos of him since (due to stitches poking through). Thanks for your answer. I will treat with just the xeno and see if there is any improvement.

Please do not home treat on spec for any undiagnosed issues, just for the sake of it.
