I got my first two piggies monday but have already noticed the amount of mess they cause running and flicking the wood shavings out!

i dont want a smelly substitute as they arent smelling at the moment

is fleece a good idea?

It all depends on how you feel about fleece, I personally love fleece, for me it's so much easier to clean and the pigs seem to love it! It's also cheaper, 2 sets of fleece lasts as long as you feel you want it to, whereas I was buying a big bag of wood shavings a week! But as I said, I'd give it a try and if you don't like it you can easily change back. It all depends on how you feel about the fleece.

I just use a very light sprinkling of shaving on thick layers of newspaper topped with hay and they love it :)

I've tried fleece but mine burrowed and it was hard work now I just roll it all up twice a week. No shaking out and washing every other day :)

I might try it, what do you put underneath yours? i bought a large bag monday when i got them and used it all just putting a thin layer on the bottom and as my mum or boyfriend buy it (I'm at college and dont have a job) i want to make it as cheap as possible for them :/ my partner bought me my piggies, cage, accessories and everything to get me started and he knows how much i appreciate it :D

& that sounds like a good idea, i just worry about the urinating, pooping on it them eating it or laying in it? I was also unsure whether if they nibbled the newspaper it would do them any harm as mine tend to nibble anything in sight, including my clothes! mallethead

I use a really thick wad of newspaper, very light dusting of shavings and lots of nice hay. I just roll the paper up every other day, and have a quick brush round, works well. I love the smell of wood shavings but they get everywhere rolleyes

I like fleece. It can be a bit annoying (hay and hair sticks to it so needs a good brushing and shaking) but I prefer it to sawdust. I had been using sawdust and hay for years with no problems. But then it started to really hurt my eyes whenever I was cleaning the cage out. All the dust was getting into them and irritating them. I couldn't imagine what it might be like for my piggy living on it 24/7, also the fact of buying it all the time and the mess it would make!

So I moved onto fleece and I just prefer it so much more. With a hay loft they do most of their business up there and so the fleece can last a while between washes :) I just use a towel and put the fleece down and that's it.

At one point I had to use left over sawdust because I ran out of newspaper to go under the hay. I noticed McMac eyes started to look puffy and weepy as soon as I put it in. So wont go near the stuff anymore.

okay i think i might give it a go i just cant decide whats best to put underneath! id give them a hay bit too seperate to the fleece so they can choose where they want to sleep :)

I think ill give it a go

as soon as i used newspaper Pepper started nibbling it but i werent sure whether it would do him any damage so havent used it since, it did get wet quite quickly though so at the moment i just have wood shavings and hay

thanks :)

definitely try fleece. woodshavings aren't good for them really. i know alot of people say they have no problems but it's inside they can cause problems and you won't see that! just my opinion though. rolleyes

i use newspaper, then absorbent bed pads, and then fleece. then in one area of the cage, lot of hay to burrow in. :)

I did the maths ages ago and using fleece is nowhere near as cheap as it seems once electricity, water and fabric washing liquid are taken into account.

If you only have one cage

Shavings are the cheapest bedding really
Followed by Finacard
Follwed by Fleece and Megazorb

If you have more than one cage

Fleece becomes one of the cheaper options as the costs doesnt double if using two cages , providing that you can put it all in one wash load. Shavings are still cheaper and finacard works out the same price as two cages on fleece :D

The cheapest, non-smelly and easy to clean out bedding is newspaper covered in hay. I've used shavings, fleece, megazorb/paper pulp, back-2-nature, shredded newspaper, hay.

Hay is by far the best. Now I wouldn't buy any expensive bedding when my boys love digging and playing in there thick hay bedding.
