Hello everyone, as I write this, my guinea pig Gus is at the Windcrest emergency vet staying overnight. This morning, I noticed he was staying mainly in one spot and was eating very slowly. This is very different to how he was acting just the day before so I was very concerned.

I immediately rushed him to the emergency vet thinking it was a possible early URI. They gave him X-rays and determined that he had gas. They stated that they wouldn't even call him bloated since I caught it so early. The vet was concerned with the gas pushing his stomach into a "c-shape", but was feeling hopeful since was still pooping, eating, and having enough energy to wriggle around the exam table.

He also stated that the rest of his GI tract looked good. They gave me the option of exploratory surgery with a 50/50 mortality rate and a $7,000 price tag, which I declined, as well as overnight monitoring, oxygen, fluid intake, and antibiotic administration.

They recently called to give me an update and stated that he was doing fine, still eating small amounts and being syringe fed as well. They also said that the gas has decreased a bit but that there is still contents in his stomach which they are unsure if this is food or cardboard. The cost to keep him monitored for a longer period of time is about $500 a day and I have already spent around $2,200 just today. Would it be unreasonable to pick him up tomorrow and ask to be prescribed medications for him if tomorrow's update is hopeful? I am worried sick as he is only about two years old and has never had any health scares like this before. Any support or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello littlegus22 what an awful thing to happen to Gus and for you to cope with.
I’d repost your post with the title ‘Health and Emergency ‘ so that an experienced member can advise you.
I’ve no experience of this but as Gus is a bit better, I’m sure after discussing with the Vet and they agree, that you could manage his condition at home. There are medications to help with ‘gas’ and you are clearly a very capable and attentive owner. He might be stressed there too. I hope the little man is better tomorro and you can bring him home - good luck
I’ve added a Guinea pig illness info that might help

Poor Gus but well done you for acting so quickly I hope he makes a speedy recovery as far as what to do I would see what your vet advised as I'm not an expert at all so can't really say much 💐

How is Gus today ? I’m hoping he is much better and you’re able to bring Gus home ❤️

Hi

BIG HUGS

These days, vet fees are such that they have to be carefully considered. Do not feel bad if you prefer to bring your boy home. You do not have a moral obligation of ending up with a bad debt; only to do your best within your reasonable means, which indeed you have. Vet cost have sadly gone way through the roof at unreasonable rates in recent years, so you are only one of many who is no longer able to keep up.

All the best. I am so very sorry that you are in that kind of situation and am keeping my fingers very firmly crossed.

Hi everyone, I first want to say thank you so much for all of the support. Sorry it took me a bit to update, it's been a hectic day.

I wanted to give an update on Gus since I just got home. I arrived at the hospital earlier today and he was indeed extremely stressed out. He had much more energy than yesterday and definitely wanted to leave. The poor baby was so stressed that he was trying to jump and hide in my jacket.

They informed me that they weren't worried about stomach torsion anymore and that the amount of gas had gone down but was still present. They wanted to keep him overnight again, but seeing him so obviously freaked out made me decline.

They sent me home with Metoclopramide, Cisapride, and Meloxicam to give him over the course of the next week. They also wanted to prescribe simethacone but I declined as I've heard it can be painful for piggies.

He definitely looks and acts much better than he was yesterday. At the hospital he wasn't eating much, but as soon as I brought him home he was instantly munching on some hay and running around.

I'm still quite worried for him but things seem to be looking up for little Gus. He's happy to be home and is currently enjoying being back in his cage with no loud animals or scary needles.

He seems to be back to his very opinionated self again and didn't hesitate to tell me how angry he was with me for taking him there 😅. His cagemate, Sean, seemed happy to see him again but also disappointed to not have the hay all to himself.

Thank you all again and I'll be sure to keep you guys updated if you are interested. Here's a picture of the little guy in question:
