After advice please. I have 2 boars that have been together for months - all OK. One is 7 years old the other is 2 years. The younger one is continually humping the older, no rumbling or anything just full on trying to hump him! The old boy ,is lovely, gentle & no desire to be boss . he looks thoroughly peed off by it , constantly trying to hide& tonight looked scared & couldn't wait to go back in the hutch & hide away in the hay. I don't want to split them unless I really have to, but I feel the old boy doesn't deserve this.any ideas?

I've only ever had sows, so I'll wait until the more boar knowledgeable members see this! Personally I wouldn't unless there's blood but someone else might know differently!

I had two brothers who fell out. They reached 15 months and one became very dominant.

Unfortunately the dominant one wasnt good at defending himself once he had started the fight.

They had a bad fight and drew blood. There was lots of rumbling, chattering and snapping.

You say theres none of that just humping.. Thats a good sign, however like you say older man may get fed up.

No expert but you shouldn't have to split unless it gets nasty and blood is drawn.

Just to help more.....

@Wiebke :)

Seems OK to me for the moment. One of my boys used to continually hump the other but after years has stopped. He was the younger one too. The older one used to just shrug him off. If you do feel you have to separate please put them side by side so they still have company by seeing, smelling & hearing each other, otherwise one could end up feeling lonely & depressed.

Thanks for replying. I've added some extra hidey things for him so he can get out of his way a bit more & hopefully have a bit of a break! Bless him he looked so cheesed off earlier & kept scuttling off trying to avoid the other randy little , all he wants is a quiet retirement.

It is either a short term hormonal spike for you younger boy, in which case it sould be over in a day or two, or your younger boy is trying to take over the top spot. Best of luck!

If necessary, separate overnight and re-introduce on neutral territory. permanent fall-outs are thankfully rare between adult boars.

I think it must gave been a hormone spike-too much sun made him frisky! All seems quiet again thankfully.
