I recently bought a male guinea pig but before buying him I asked the rodent care specialist that worked at the pet store if he would be fine living alone, she said yes. But then after i bought him i went online to find information about guinea pigs and saw that its not the best idea to leave them alone. So i adopted a female guinea pig and obviously I cant put them together because he will impregnate her. Should i at least put their cages next to each other so they could talk.?.?.(i will still take them out of their cages sometimes to let them play but watch them very carefully.)

Don't let them play together at all. It takes a split second. If you look away, he could impregnate her.

Why did you adopt a female? It would have been better for you to adopt a male as a buddy for him.

Since you already have both gender, would you consider getting the male neutered?

You can keep the cage side-by-side. Make sure the male cannot get into the female cage. If you have a open top C&C cage, please add a lid on the male's cage.

lissie,
do you know the price to get a male neutered?

and thx

It really depends on your location. In my area, I have found local humane society that offers low cost neuter for guinea pigs for $75. The vet in the area charge around $200 - $250.

The best way to find out is to call around and ask. Don't just choose the cheapest one, you'll want to make sure the vet has experience neutering guinea pigs.

See this page for more info on neutering.
