My uncle, who’s 88 years old lives in Far North Queensland sadly now by himself after his Brother died almost 2 years ago. It was heartbreaking that I couldn’t go up to visit during the Pandemic and say goodbye before he passed away and also couldn’t be there to support my uncle caring for him.
Finally we managed to book a visit to see my Uncle for the first time for a few years. He’s just recovered from battling a tough chest infection which spurred me on to just book the flights and get over there!
I worry leaving the animals, especially the Guinea Pigs. Our house sitter has sat for us a few times now so felt a bit more at ease being away for just 3 nights. I prepared the Piggies dinners and left instructions about everything else and all went fine. I came home to happy piggies whose hay trays were full to the brim of Oaten hay! Strange that she didn’t seem to use the grass hay..But at least the Oaten hay was plentiful!
Unfortunately I’ve developed an irrational fear of flying, when we went to Sydney recently I had a terrible flight, having a panic attack sobbing the whole way there and back. Which was only an hours flight!
Thankfully I managed to keep myself together this time flying up to Cairns which takes 3 hours from Melbourne. I was scared, but didn’t cry. I had my earphones on very loud, kept my eyes shut for takeoff and just held onto Jon very tightly lol.
Our holiday was perfect! We picked up the hire car and proceeded to drive to The Tablelands, a beautiful drive up and down an extremely windy rainforest mountain.
Our little Airbnb was in a nice location, right at the base of a lake. Perfect for wildlife watching.
Seeing my uncle was wonderful, and emotional. Sad to see just the one without the other, The brothers had lived together for around 60 years. Thankfully he has good company in bird form, a Rainbow lorikeet called ‘BottleTop’. They found her outside their house in the gutter about 8 years ago and have been house mates ever since.
This is my third trip to the area but every-time it’s just as special. There is something so soothing and magical about the Rainforest. I was hoping to see a Tree Kangaroo this time, but unfortunately had no luck. I’d also love to have seen a Cassowary and Platypus again, but alas not this time!
Anyway here are some photos..
