Does any one have any knowledge on easy&effective ways to insulate a shed?
The shed itself will be 7foot by 4 foot and will home free-roaming pigs (something I've never done before) it's of very solid, double framed, tongue and groove construction and will be raised off our patio on slabs

Hello!

As the days are getting colder I'm planning to put bubble wrap around the main areas of the shed that will cause drafts. Luckily most of these places on mine are high up. If they're low down you could cover the bubble wrap with a thin sheet of wood to avoid the piggies chewing on it.

I use a thick layer of bedding and many hiding places packed with hay to keep in as much warmth as possible.

Snuggle safe heat pads you put in the microwave are also great for keeping them warm.

I can't remember the proper name for it, and it was a bit expensive but I used the bubble wrap stuff with silver on the outside. The shed was like a piece of toast in the winter, and quite cool at Summer

Thank you, I am planning on getting one of those heat pads for their main house and will look at bubble wrap (!)

That sounds interesting! Did you have to use any membranes on the inside or outside of the bubble wrap? Will obvs ply over the bits that piggies could reach!

Cellotex. It's not cheap but can sometimes be picked up off gumtree cheap. It's what we had to use in our house/roof when it was built. It's horrible stuff to cut but prob the best insulator you'll find. It would have to be covered by ply or something so they don't nibble it

Yeah, I've has a quick look at that, but apparently you should have a breathable membrane on the outside (shed side) or it and a polythene membrane on the inside of it before plying?

Depends how much money you want to spend, you can buy ply with insulation glued on one side like this:

or you can buy space blanket insulation

and just board over the bits the piggies can reach with cheap chipboard

I built my hutches into the shed and put the space blanket between the shed wall and the hutch wall so the pigs/buns are nice and snug at night, My shed has power so they have a oil filled radiator to keep them toastie on really cold nights. ;)

I am insulating my shed at the moment! We are using Cetotex/kingspan insulation boards and chipboard. Not the cheapest option but to be honest I wanted it to be a good job and a nice place for me and my piggies.

What kind of oil filled radiator do you have?

That's my thoughts exactly, you cant beat being nice and warm with plenty of light when you're cleaning them and it's blowing force 10 and pouring down outside. :tu:

Space blankets look interesting! I will have to work out the area that I need covering and have a look at prices etc.

Did you ply/ chip board over the bubble foil beyond where pigs could reach? It sounds like it could be a bit glare-y in the summer if the sun is on it!

Might sound nuts …….but….I have used left over kids play mats to insulate our boys area, the sleeping area is very warm x, you can pick them up cheap 2nd hand & would be great for a shed floor & sides?

I really love that idea I'm considering doing that on my shed floor.

I think that using Cetotex/kingspan will keep your guinea pigs warm. But adding lots of hay will make it even warmer.

I'm also in the process of considering a shed conversion for free roaming pigs. I'm reading and taking on board all the advice. I too would love to see some pics to get some more ideas
