Hello everyone

As the doctors think that my OH has an allergy to the Guinea pigs (we think that Squidge brought something with her from the store that doesn't agree with him) we have decided to move the entire herd from the house to a shed as he has been very poorly these last three weeks which almost landed him in hospital.

This shed will be custom built as my OH is a D&T teacher who loves building things. The shed will be 8x16 feet so the C&C cage will fit along one wall. Storage will be underneath the cage and hay bales will be hung on the wall. There will be lighting, a radiator, dehumidifier, and I will be looking in to cooling for the summer. The shed will be six steps from my back door, and we will fit a baby monitor so I will pick up if there is something wrong as I will be able to hear them.

What do we need for insulation? Polystyrene or Celotex sheets? What could I use on the floor? There will be a brush in there for sweeping and every year I will spray the shed to keep it rain proof.

This is the only way that I can keep the herd.

Hi,

I used Celotex boards for my shed - they’re easy (if a bit messy) to cut to size. I would also ply over them if I did it again as they’re not pretty! Plain Plystreene boards may be cheaper ?
I would also insulate the floor, ply over it and then put down Lino for easy cleaning.
Don’t forget the roof either as most heat is lost there.

I’d factor in ventilation too as during the winter windows (with wire to stop things getting in) will need to stay shut most of the time.

I used polysterene with plywood over it in one of my sheds. I always have lino down on the floor. So easy to clean and not a problem if your feet are wet and muddy in winter. I use cardboard or newspaper as doormats too!

Sounds like they are going to have a great space.

What do you use to stick the lino to the floor @flowerfairy?
When I bought lino for the floor of my rabbit enclosure I asked the staff what to use to stick it to a wooden shed floor.
They were happy to point me in the right direction (a specific glue for sticking lino to wood - who knew).

However when the time came I cut the lino 3 - 4 cms bigger than needed on each side and then cut a 'V' shape inn each corner so I could fit it.
This created a very snug fit and has worked well without any glue at all.
This means that if I need to replace the lino at any point I can just pull it out and start again.
But this might not work with guineas, as the rabbits are fully litter trained, so I don't need to deal with damp corners!
Plus they don't nibble the lino but I think the piggies might.

Can't wait to see the finished shed, wishing you OH a quick recovery!

I used tacks and just pinned it all down
That's a good idea. I am getting my new lot a shiny new hutch in the spring as theirs will only do another winter - it was a rubbish P@H one and was half price - glad I never paid full price for it now! I'll be wanting to stick lino on the floor of the new hutch to protect it. 5 piggies produce a lot of wee!

I use wooden dowels tacked round the edges to keep the lino in place although on this latest shed the lino was put in before the walls were put on which is great.
