Hello,

Whilst looking for a friend for Aegir, I have found two adorable male 'Sheba Mini Yak' guinea pigs and was hoping to find some information about the breed and daily care.

Have any of the other members on here owned this breed?

Aegir is 2.5 years old, but he can be a bit jumpy so while bonding he might be a bit fear aggressive.

Thanks in advance! 🙂

Hi

Sheba Mini Yaks are not a common pet breed (they seem to be a bit more common in Australia) and are still mostly kept in show breeding circles without making it much into the commercial mass breeding mix that most piggies in pet keepers' hands originate from whether they are bought from pet shops, online for-sale breeders or rescue adopted. They are one of the new designer breeds created over the last decade.

They are bred out from a mix of breeds and looking like a kind of an abyruvian (an abyssinian x peruvian) on steroids as the ultimate 'bad hair day' piggy with a very accentuated triangular aby head taken to the extreme and the body hair going everywhere. I have listed them in our breeds guide but as we run the guide as a courtesy on our strictly pro-rescue/non-breeding forum and haven't really come across them much on here, information outside specialist breeding circles is pretty scant.

Sounds like an interesting breed! Just wanted to ask whether you’re planning to bond him with a pair of boars? It would be better if he can either live alongside them or you bond him with one and find the other a friend. You don’t want to risk the bond with the pair. Pictures of the piggies?😆

Thanks for the info Wiebke!

Yes, I am planning on bonding Aegir with the two young boys. I have contemplated the bonding not working, if so they could live beside him or one of the 2 boys could live with Aegir (and other baby goes beside them). I'll update how the bonding goes, planning to pick them up on the 22/23rd April.

I'll post the pigtures if it goes through, I want it to be a surprise 🥰

Do also be aware that attempting to bond three boars, although the most likely course is ending up with a pair and a single, it can ruin all bonds and you could end up with three single piggies.
Ensure the cage covers 36 square feet if you are going to try this.

I sincerely hope it doesn't ruin all bonds 😟

As I say it’s most likely you will end up with a pair and a single but ruining all bonds and having three singles is a possibility, and something which has been seen to happen, so you would be wise to plan for that event also with extra cages

Putting youngsters or teenagers into the mix is the one which is most likely to fail. Boar trios tend to work better when they are all elderly boars with considerably reduced testosterone.

good luck

Been reading this thread with interest as I had not heard of this type of pig. But now I have looked them up and I'm intrigued - I wonder if my little Fifi Fluffybottom has this mix of breeding? She certainly looks the part!
