Shaun had his operation today ... I have four boars, three of which are now neutered. All have been operated on by my local vet and Shaun seems fine. He has a post operative checkup booked for Wednesday then again in 8 days.

I am going to keep in indoors for the night although he lives in a hutch and in a shed but I want to keep an eye on him. His wound looks nice and neat and basically he seems to be wondering why I keep fussing over him! :) He is a little sleepy but eating grass and moving about well.

Shaun has been living on his own after fighting with his brother so I had to separate them and although it seems cruel to make him have this operation, I know (hopefully all goes well for him over the next couple of days) that he will be happier when I find him a rescue female to live with.

I will let you know how he goes along.

Our Sammy was also neutered today! He's a lively wee man (no pun intended!) and normally jumps around and sleeps on top of his pigloo so we've had take it away for a while and replaced his straw with vetbed. He's been running around wheeking for food so hopefully it hasn't damaged his personality too much. We rescued him just over a week ago to be a companion for our 2 girls so they'll all be together soon when he's recovered. All the best to Shaun!

Thanks crus and choloe for the good wishes.
Shaun is tucked up now all cosy on a towel in the kitchen and last time I looked at him he was eating nicely. He has had a drink and some greens as well.
I hope Sammy goes on well and soon he has two lovely lady piggies to cuddle him!

Glad to hear both Piggy's are doing well after their ops.I've got to get my little Smudge 'done' as he was supposed to be a little girl! & I've had to separate him from his sister. The vet said I 'll have to wait till he's 6 months old so we're counting the days until the middle of August. I let him have some supervised time with his sister & she's such a tease. When he starts getting too amorous she wees in his face.her aim is brilliant. I had read that that could happen but didn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes....it was soooo funny.Smudges face was a picture with wee dripping off his nose...I wish i'd had my camera handy.

This is very reassuring considering I might get Merlin done - get well soon boys!

Any specific aftercare of the wound required?

no special aftercare needed, not for my scooby anyway. He was done last wed had check up yesterday and he is fine. He was nearly 16 weeks when he was done it varies from vet to vet for what age they will do it

Shaun is absolutely fine today ... interferring with everything that I was doing when sorting out in his hutch this evening.
He slept in a piggie carrier last night in the kitchen and I got up at 3.30 am to check that it was ok! Mad, or what? :embarassed: He was fast asleep and seemed a little put out that I had woken him to check all was ok. Men, eh? ;D

He is back to the vet tomorrow for a post-op check but he is eating well and passing everything he do should.
I had a giggle, misspiggy64, when you said Smudge get a showering when he gets to amorous ... that will teach him to go where he shouldn't ... well obviously at the wrong time. Watch his sister though, coz suddenly it might be the "right time" when your back is turned or you are hanging out the washing! :o ;D

Just pick a good vet with lots of experience with piggies and/or rabbits. Ask what their fee is and what post-op checks they include in the price.

If they are a good vet, then their prime concern will be the welfare of the animal. My husband took an unexpected call from the vet this morning checking on Shaun and if he was well overnight and eating ok. My vet is Lucas Veterinary Centre in Longwell Green, Bristol and have been vet of the year, or something similiar.

I have been going there for probably 20 years and trust them 110% ... vets, nurses and reception staff are fab!

Hi people,

my wife posted earlier in this thread baout our wee boy Sammy, he is eating and drinking and seems fine in general. I looked at his stitches and they seem fine also. He does seem very swollen down there but i assume that its normal?

I think its normal as scooby was swollen also but it went after a couple of days

Sammy seems to be doing fine, the swelling has reduced and he's chirping away quite happily, running around his cage waiting for food to appear. He's not been eating all his veg but he finishes cucumber before it lands in the bowl!
:smitten:How's Shaun doing?

Shaun is doing really well ... his wound has healed nicely and is totally dry. He has been out in the run and is eating fine.
He has another post-op check on Thursday.

Glad to hear that Sammy is doing ok also. Does he live on his own?
I will be looking for a lovely female friend for Shaun soon ... I can't wait! :smitten:

glad both boys are doing well :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: hoping sammy likes his 2 girl friends when he is healed O0 as for shaun perhaps take him to a rescue in a few weeks time and let him pick his own friend/s. some rescues even let you have him with his friend/s for a few hours to see how they get on. this is what i have read on here as i am in oz. ring your rescue centre first to see if you can bring shaun with you O0 good luck and hoping both boys continue to improve :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Shaun was running around his hutch last night. Into the bedroom, out of the bedroom, back in and back out and jumping up in the air! He is two years old so not a baby. It did make us giggle!

I said to my husband "I reckon castrating him as given him a new lease of life" then looked over smiling towards my husband and said "hey, do you think it has that same effect on humans?!" ;D ;D

Sammy had his post op checkup on Saturday and the vet said he's fine and doesn't need to see him again. We didn't reailse that his stiches are disolvable, we thought he'd have to go back to get them out so i hope this is the case! He's currently living upstairs in the hutch with the stairs removed and the girls are living downstairs. We have them outside on the grass separated by the lid of the hutch but he's desperate to meet them properly.......so desparate, he's started chewing his way through the wood! They've to be separated for another 3 weeks but i wonder if he'll chew his way to them first! It's so funny when he start wheeking, it sets the girls off too! :D

Well, the six weeks of waiting is nearly up :)... I am going to find a companion for Shaun. It is a big decision because do I place him with two young ladies (Princess and Panda, which I am a little worried about because Princess is blind :-\) or do I put him with Josie, a more mature lady, who finds herself unexpectedly alone after losing Rikkyboy as her partner a couple of days ago?

From a practical point of view, it would be best for Shaun to go with Princess and Panda, and then I could try Josie with Stuart and Sparrow.
My husband is making me two nice hutches (5ft by 2ft) and that would be great for three piggies in each. Leaving Joey and Holly separately in their own hutches above.

Any thoughts anyone please?

It is hard to make a suggestion as you know your pigs personalities best but couldnt you try him with Princess and Panda and see how that goes? If not well, you have the other option :)

Hope Shaun is well after his OP, Georgie is doing very well after his :D

i wouldn't put him with panda and princess as should should not make any changes for princess and if she and panda are going well i would leave them as they are. it is a hard one when princess is blind. you could try in paly time or cuddly time and see how it goes but i understood with blind piggies the less changes the better. so glad shaun is feeling better i would go with josie and see how it goes and panda and princess have eachother and why upset a bonded pair? good luck with what ever you decide O0 sending hugs to them all and to you too :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: and princess is dependant on panda shaun could mess that up then again he might not, and josie is all alone but them she might not be ready for another friend yet? this a hard one O0 wishing you luck :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: glad georgie is doing well too :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Well, today I put Shaun with Princess and Panda together in the run. I bathed them all one by one in the run so that would distract them.

All is looking good at the moment. Panda was very taken by Shaun! :-*

I am hoping all goes well when I put them in a hutch this evening, which I might add is neutral territory, prior to them moving into a new 5ft by 2ft hutch when my hubby finishes it.

Shaun is now living quite happily with Princess and Panda. Although neutered he did try to do "manly" things for a while.

Shaun seems much more outgoing but I guess he won't be the boss within the group, it will be Panda. Princess does seem a little lonely at times but I think it is only because she doesn't know or see what else is going on. She has a bigger belly than her sister so that is a good sign.

All three were out in the run on Sunday afternoon - I have a little house for shelter in the run, but Princess was just sleeping out in the open. I picked her up and popped her in the house but blow me, within 2 seconds, she was out again ... little toad! :))
