Tofu has been to the vet this morning for an arthritis checkup and I’ve been advised to give him a bum bath to clear up some of the gunk from his grease gland. We’re also putting his arthritis meds up again so he’ll hopefully be able to maintain it himself after this

The vet said to use very gentle pet or baby shampoo. We have this shampoo in for our dog - wondering if it might be suitable? Otherwise I’ll pop to the shop to get some baby shampoo. As it’s just a one off and I don’t need to bathe him regularly I don’t think it’s worth ordering a guinea specific one (though if it becomes a long term thing I would).

I haven’t done a guinea pig bath before so any tips welcome! Tofu is pretty calm and chill but that might change as soon as he sees the water lol

This is our bathing guide which will hopefully help you.

Regarding the shampoo - if plain water isn’t going to work then a baby shampoo would be best for a one off.
Gorgeous guineas for more long term bathing needs

Thanks very much, that guide is great 😊 I think I’ll nip out to get some baby shampoo to be safe. It should be just a one-off bath rather than a long term problem once we get his meds on track and he’s in less pain

Thank you, unscented baby wipes I have to hand actually 😊 also nipped out to get unscented baby shampoo today but I’m on the fence if I really need to use it. The vet said to but I might start with plain water and see if that gets enough of the gunk off without

I use water wipes on Misty as her bum is very stinky and has turned yellow🤢. She is desperate need of a bum bath (which she enjoys and she likes the hair dryer) but it's too cold to give her it atm she lives in the garage and I don't want to risk her getting a chill. When the weather warms up a bit, the first thing I'll do is give her a bum bath.

She really needs to take her personal hygiene a bit more seriously! Even old girl Thea manages to keep her derriere clean and she has a lot of muscle wastage as she has turned 8. The Queen of Floof (Bramble) never has a dirty bumbum either. I think that Misty is just lazy.

Misty is setting a bad example! Haha. It’s good to hear that Thea and Bramble are managing though 😊 Tofu is 4 and recently stopped taking proper care of himself as the arthritis in his back hips and legs got worse. He had a ton of gunk when I got in there - that fur was hiding a lot of it 😅

Bath time went well. I did end up needing to use the shampoo to get the most stubborn bits off and I gave him a good trim as well so hopefully he’ll be able to get to it himself now/when his meds are settled. He was a good boy and quite relaxed throughout, just got a bit fed up at the end when I was rinsing the shampoo out. He was very chatty as well, catching me up on all the gossip 😂

I popped him on a snugglesafe to dry off but as they’re indoor piggies and I had the heating on the chill wasn’t really a problem. Glad he’s a bit cleaner and hopefully more comfy now
