Hi

We have a female sow (11 month) who has had her first litter last night...at 2330 as I heard and watched it. 4 babies in total (impressive) but the first one out is having a few problems. It seems to be not moving around like the others, keeps trying to push with its legs but doesn't get anywhere and is shaking quite a bit. It got cleaned up right away when born and didn't seem to bad then but doesn't seem to have progressed much since then. All other 3 and mother are doing fine. She is reluctant to but does feed them.

Any suggestions help on what we can do with this little one? Any more questions need answering, let me know.

TIA

Update - fed it condensed milk and water (50/50) and wiped its bum. Managed to get a couple of tea spoons down it and seemed to relax when its bum was cleaned. Didn't 'pass' anything then but put it with its siblings. Likes being near them but still can't move easily by itself and shakes a fair bit.

Any advice would be great! It's our 5 litter and we've never had a problem nor miscarriage...only ever problem was a skin irritation with one which needed a cooling ointment!

poor baby

this forum is against breeding as there are so many piggies in rescue need homes but would advise you take baby to your vet for a check over.
hoping things go better for the little mite. you could perhaps check this site http://www.guinealynx.info/ as they will help you. good luck and hugs to the little one. welcome to the forum from me and the girls in oz:)p:)p

I don't think piggies (even babies) can have evaporated milk. It sounds like this one is probably the runt of the litter. I would probably try and keep it warm. Also syringe water hourly so piggie doesn't get dehydrated. The only other thing I can think of when my piggie doesn't eat is vegetable baby food but I don't know if this can be fed to baby piggies? Puree veg like carrot and syringe that. The other thing I can think of is to get some critical care which is liquid food and syringe that hourly. This can be purchased from your vets. As I say these are just suggestions and I hope they help. There are other people on here with probably more experience than me. Good luck xx

Well...the shaking pig was put down after 3 days due to it shaking. Could have been either a brain or spinal injury. The second smallest lasted 12 days before passing on. It was half the size of the others and just died!

The other two are thriving now. The scruffy little one is massive (never seen a three week old that big) and the other is normal size and they're both eating, drinking and playing as normal.

Read on many sites you can give condensed miolk (50/50 with water with a tiny bit of sugar in). The silver one took it before dying quite often but just didn't have enough strength

Oh, I am sorry for the little one. When I read the thread at first I wanted to say exactly what rw3399 said: I don't think condensed milk is any good. I only give my piggies soya yoghurt or some soya products due to their intolerance to "normal" milk. I have no experience with babies but when my piggies need some probiotic stuff I go for probiotic soya yoghurt rather than normal yoghurt.

I'm sorry you lost two baby piggies but I'm sure you did everything you could. Good to know the others are doing well x

I'm so sorry to hear about the two tiny baby piggys. obviously it wasnt meant to be, and least they are in a better place now.

sending lots of hugs

Aww sorry your two babies died.:( I lost two sows a few years ago a couple of days apart that had just had babies and I fed them all with Sherleys Lactol and they all did really well on it.:)

When Billie and Charlie where born their mother was part of a larger rescue group that all died suddenly and we think it may have been a genetic problem heart or brain Charlie only lasted 2 weeks and Billie 7 wks
Laurent is from Helena from that group but she is we think half from the ones that died
It may just be a throw back or maybe too much in breeding which can cause its own problems
Good luck with the others thou x

Thanks all

Here's all 4 of them. The gold one is the who died right away, Silverfish after 12 days and the brown ones are very strong!

STACKED PIGS!

Touch wood they will hold on. The plain brown one was on milk and was more accepted by their mother after a week...and the big pig bullied everyone else! Honestly, I haven't seen one get this big from 5 litters now!
