Hi!
I have a 2 year-old male and we have had so many tooth problems with him (Sweetie). It started with the his loss of weight and drooling. I took him to the vet and they had to trim his teeth and said that he had the start of dental disease. One of his incisors fell out and she wasn’t sure it would grow back. She educated me on what they need to eat (apparently the pet store and things I have read were wrong). Made sure he had tons of hay and small amount of pellets, spinach carrrots and strawberries throughout the day.
For 6 months following the appointment, things were going well. However, last week I noticed he was aggressive with his cries around food time, was always hungry and was starting to drool again. I have two males, so I would take Spike to another area to eat so Sweetie could have more time and it would take him 3 hours to finish a small amount of food.
I contacted the vet and after an exam and X-ray they found that he had an abscess tooth, one of his incisors had fallen out and there was what she thought was a benign mass were the tooth was. Also upon closer inspection she realized he had lost all of his lower molars and roots on the right side, which she didn’t notice at first because he had severe infection and swelling. She said if they can get the swelling and infection under control he will need trimming every 6-8 weeks for the upper molars and will most likely continue to cut into his lower gums and cause infections.
I am at a loss. Am I being cruel to continue to try to save him? The vet is recommending euthanasia. I am so sad and know he is suffering, but he is also a fighter. But is this too much for his to overcome?

HI!

I am no expert nor professional, Putting him down would be a lot of pain for you.. but think of all the pain he is feeling. Do you think he is able to fight and overcome this? Or do you think he will continue to fight this until he can’t. You’re happiness or his. Not trying to force anything this is a serious decision you should talk over with you’re vet. You are not being selfish in any way, If I were in you’re shoes I would try to hold on as long as possible too. But at the end of the day who’s happiness first?

Will keep you and you’re piggy in my prayers 🙏🏼.

Thank you! That is where I am at. My kids are really sad and i told them that he is in a lot of pain, and although on the outside he looks good, in a few months he will lose more weight or get another infection…he is the one with the big personality, he would be so missed:(

I understand and I feel you, If he doesn’t make it (God forbid) It will be hard.. But just know he will find peace when he crosses the rainbow bridge..If this was me I would hold on and spend his last moments with him.. But I would have guilt on my end knowing I could get Him out of pain earlier but I decided to hold on for my happiness.

I am never one to prolong life for the sake of it, but it is worth bearing in mind that very few vets have much experience dealing with guinea pig dental issues.

I would ask for a second opinion from the Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Northampton.
They specialise in guinea pig dental issues and have saved many pigs that had been written off by previous vets.
As you have already had x-rays and a dental done it may be possible to forward this information to them (via your current vet) to get an initial opinion.

Honestly if he has lost all of his lower molars on one side I a not sure that much can be done, but it is always worth having the tests reviewed by an expert before making any major decisions.

If you can get to see either Simon or Kim Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic you will know exactly what is wrong with Sweetie. They are experts, they will do any teeth filing consciously there and then and give you an assessment of Sweeties teeth so you can make a very informed decision about Sweeties future. No referrals necessary, they are also very reasonably priced as they don’t need to use aesthetic. I can thoroughly recommend them
Good luck x

Thank you so much for your advice.

the vet only deals with exotic animals-like guinea pigs. She has been right with previous diagnosis. If there was a chance the teeth would grow back I would not hesitate-but it looks like the root system is gone…not sure what would do that kind of damage in a short period but I am leaning towards cancer:(.

😭 Oh poor Sweetie. Is he on pain meds?

This has to be the worst dental issue Ive heard of. As a human who's been going through painful dental issues the past 2 months, I can only imagine 🥺😭

I'll be thinking of you both 💕

I hope we didn’t do something wrong on our part. I had pigs when I was younger and we didn’t even feed them hay-so things have changed. I really hope that it’s a fluke or a genetic deformity. Our other boy spike-has always been double the size and seems healthier. Sweetie is on pain meds, but is so whinny and always hungry-it takes so long to eat and he can only eat soft things. Hard to watch him:(

So sorry for you, please don’t blame yourself, you have just been unlucky. You have done your very best for Sweetie and that is what matters x
I ended up with two dental piggies Bill and Ted (in my avatar). They were brothers, their dental problem were completely different. Ted had molar spurs and Bill damaged an incisor that sadly made his incisors grow strangely in all angles. The vet said between them they had a set of perfect teeth! Bill’s molars and Ted incisors 😆 it was just one of those unlucky things that sometimes happen
