Hi everyone,
My guinea pig Pepper is 6.5 years old and has been weeing blood for quite some time now - i’ve been away and family have been looking after her for a couple of months, but when i came home i noticed blood in Peppers wee. She is in a little bit of discomfort when she wees but not a large amount. She’s also lost a lot of weight over time (was 1kg in august and now 850g). This could’ve been going on a while as she has been living with a retired couple who aren’t the most observant! she’s squeaking, moving around and drinking normally and eating all veggies and nuggets but less hay than usual (although still some) so i’ve been syringe feeding her as much as she’ll have a day. she adores the syringe food so sometimes has up to 70ml a day. She’s been on Baytril (0.35ml x2 a day) and dog metecam (5kg dose) for a week but there is still a significant amount of blood in her wee.
My other pig who passed a few years ago had a bladder stone and her bladder was quite enlarged and felt very hard - peppers is not like this at all and the vet said he couldn’t feel any stones. she also had a high temp at the vet
i can’t think of why the antibiotics aren’t working other than the mistake i’ve made with the probiotics that i usually mix with the syringe food - ive forgotten to wait a couple hours before giving probiotics after the antibiotic dose. Will change this asap.
So could this be why the antibiotics aren’t working? or could it be a more reisistant uti or stone? given her age and weight a stone would be a worry.

i would see if you can take your piggie to see the vet,to reassess where you are with the treatment.your piggie is a good age.good luck. Its such a worry.

My 4 year old sow Heidi began bleeding similar to your Pepper so I took her to vets and it turned out she had a uterine tumor. I would definitely take Pepper back to the vets. Can I ask if she has been spayed?

no she hasn’t! i was reading earlier and it is sounding reproductive like so i will take her back to the vets. did you have your pig spayed? i don’t know if i could put pepper under for a big op because of her age or weight so is there anything else i could do for her?

At the time Heidi began bleeding she was not spayed so had to undergo an emergency spay and have the uterine tumor removed. I understand exactly where you are coming from, I didn't want to go through with the surgery and Heidi was only 3 and half years old at the time, obviously, Pepper is quite a bit older.

In all honesty, there is a number of reasons why Pepper could be bleeding and Peppers situation could be completely different. I think Heidi had a scan/xray and thats how the tumor was detected. Forgive me as I have been through that many surgeries with my 5 piggies, it's hard to remember which entailed what, been a very hard year.

All I would do is take her back to the vets and mention your concerns about reproductive organs etc. I will have my fingers crossed for you and pray that it is something not serious. I would carry on with the antibiotics as they can take a while to take effect and definitely carry on with the metacam. Also, keep on with the probiotics/syringe feed aswell. I'm also not sure if it makes a difference on when you give probiotics, I usually give my piggies there's just in-between doses of the antibiotics. I could be wrong tho. Please keep us posted on how Pepper gets on. How many times a day are you giving metacam?x

That does look to be a quite a bit of bleeding. Please do return to the vet.
It may be that further checks (x rays etc) are needed because the issue is not one which is going to be helped by antibiotics.
(There are other reasons why an antibiotic might not help straight away for a bacterial issue ie It may be that there is a better antibiotic needed for the issue or that a longer course is needed)

You do need to make sure probiotics are not given at the same time as antibiotics. They need to be given 1-2 hours after an antibiotic dose

I would definitely take her back and ask to have some scans done. Ultrasounds or x rays for example xx

went back to vet. she’s lost a tiny bit of weight again and her gums are a bit pale so not looking good. Her stomach also feels a bit fluid filled and painful.
Vet said likely cancer or some sort of tumour due to her age and an operation most likely wouldn’t be successful, as the vets are closed tomorrow he said we could either pts now or wait until Monday for a scan to see if anything could be done. He did say euthanasia would be the most likely option however come Monday as she’s in quite a bit of pain and isn’t showing any signs of recovering.
We decided to opt for the scan on Monday and she’s home now, munching on grass.
Not massively sure what to think to be honest - i know it’s the kindest way for her to go but i can’t wrap my head around it!

I’m sorry for the news 😞 but I too would have opted for the scan just in case it’s something treatable. Unless she starts to go downhill and you have to have her pts before Monday. My Elizabeth was bleeding fresh blood and was treated for a uti, however, I wasn’t happy and took her to another vet who scanned her. Nothing was found on the scan so all we can assume is that it was a uti some other infection or a hay poke to her vulva but we’ll never know. I really do hope it isn’t cancer and that your girl will be ok x

Oh so sorry it isn’t better news @Whizzy I hope the scan goes well and it turns out to be a rather stubborn UTI which you can find a different AB to treat it quickly 🤞

Could i ask what happened to Elizabeth? honestly i’m struggling to wrap my head round all this as Pepper is still eating - it doesn’t quite seem real that she might not be here this time tomorrow, but the vet did say that if it was infection she would’ve at least put on some weight instead of lost some.
Scan in the morning and then we’ll know by lunchtime.

I'm so sorry this is happening. I understand exactly how you are feeling and I wish you and your Pepper all the luck in the world for tomorrow. Hopefully the scan will pick up nothing serious. I will 🙏 for Pepper x

Elizabeth has started to pass fresh blood again but like only a drop at a time so I’ve started her back on the antibiotics. My other two girls both have hay poke (you couldn’t make it up) and are back at the vets on Wednesday so I’m going to have Elizabeth seen again too. She’s acting perfectly normal and hasn’t lost any weight at all. I’m wondering if it’s down to stress or something. Good luck for today, let us know how you get on x

Hi there,
My piggie is peeing blood and has been on antibiotics for nearly a week and he doesn't seem to be getting better.
How did the scan go?
Thinking I should take my boy in for a scan. Any advice would be really helpful.
