Hi, so my pig has been diagnosed with a UTI (fingers crossed it's just a UTI) but the vet had run out of the liquid form (Co-Trimoxazole) so I've been prescribed the pill form to split in 2 and give half every 12 hours after being crushed up.

I'm just a bit worried about the dosage, the blister pack says 80/400mg per pill (I don't really know what that means, is 80mg of septrin in a 400mg pill?) and I'm concerned that this might be a bit excessive for a 1.25kg pig.

The vet also prescribed 0.3ml of buprenorphine twice a day as well, which also seems quite high, considering an exotic vet recently prescribed 0.07 three times a day for a pig who weighs 400g less (in fact I've opted to only give him 0.1ml as I don't want it knocking him out).

I'm really not familiar with pill forms of medication, so does that seem OK to anyone in the know?

Hi, I’m afraid I’m unsure about the septrin dose as I’ve only ever had it in liquid form so am tagging in @furryfriends (TEAS) who I think may be more familiar with it?

As for the buprenorphine, 0.3 ml twice a day does seem high. My Ella had it and she was was prescribed 0.06ml three times a day so I would double check with your vet before giving it him x

Yeah I should have said something then, but for now I'm just sticking with the 0.1 twice a day as the painful poos and wees have stopped.

I think his appetite is going though, these pills might be quite harsh on his stomach, so now I'm syringe feeding along with fibreplex. He is so much more difficult to get food and meds in than any pig I've owned, I'm definitely getting bitten at some point.

All the best. I know that septrin is suppose to not be so harsh but the tablets may be different x
Thank you. That was my assumption as well, which is why I didn't start fibreplex right away, that was definitely a mistake.

Just a follow up question: he's definitely losing his appetite: little drinking and hay eating, still eating cucumber, lettuce and green beans, but turning his nose up at pepper (will try green pepper this evening though) and tomato, but I've ramped up emeraid syringe feeding.

Should I ask for metoclopramide / cisapride at this point? I can't recall if gut stimulants benefit this kind of appetite loss. Also pain meds: I'm running low on loxicom, but would pain killers also benefit this kind of situation?

Thank you

I would definitely ask for pain meds and asking for a gut stimulant won’t cause any harm x
OK, I'll get on that. Only halfway through his antibiotics course so he's only going to get worse so having things on standby seems sensible.

He definitely needs painkillers. A piggy in pain will usually lose their appetite, never mind any effect antibiotics may have.
