Hi everyone. My 2 new guinea pigs had to be seperated today after a nasty fight. Jasper is about 18mnths and baby Jem is 3 months. They have been bickering for a couple of weeks now and there have been a few scratches and nips. But today the baby got a bad bite on his throat, i found him sitting in a pool of blood so you can imagine my horror :(
They are now separate but side by side so they can see and sniff eachother (although Jasper still seems very angry) I just wondered how many of you have had this and successfully managed to get them back together? I am not risking it for a long while, i couldn't cope with that again ! They seem fairly happy on there own so i'm not in a hurry. I just wondered if anyone else has had this experience?

So sorry to read about the separation - finding the blood and wound must have been horrible.

I am a newbie to GPs so can only really offer sympathy - I have had to separate my 2 boys today as well:( because of repeated bites - ears and nose. My thread is a couple below yours and I hope we get some advice soon because I am v worried and I guess you are too:( Lots of luck and good thoughts for your piggies:)

My 2 pigs have lived together for years and after a brief separation due to surgery when I reintroduced them they started to fight for the first time ever (no blood shed thankfully).

Maybe I'm being over cautious but like you I'm not sure whether I want to risk putting them together again in case this time one of them is not so lucky.

I hate the idea of them living separately but I've reconfigured the setup so they are side by side for company and know each other is there. They don't seem bothered at all except for the occasional nose touching followed by loud chattering!

I'm sure it must have been scary finding the little one bleeding (I hope he's ok now). I can't really offer any advice about trying them again because I'm too scared about doing it myself!

Any update on the separated piggies? How is the wound on the baby?

My boys have spent the day apart - I tried a reintroduction in a outside pen but pretty quickly turned to hackles raised and loud teeth chattering so I chickened out and separated them again:( I don't like the lack of piggy talking when they are in different hutches.

Hope things are calmer for you today.:)

The wound is fine, nice and clean. I'm really upset because Jasper seems so sad on his own. We already have two boys so cant take on more. I held Jem in Jaspers pen and he wasnt amused, hackles up and growling, he looked ready to lunge. I can only think to go back to the rescue centre and swap one of them, try another pairing. But this breaks my heart, i love them both and cant imagine giving one up 8...

I am so sorry, but after a bad bite like that, a reintroduction is simply not feasible anymore.

It is a heart wrenching decision you have to make - in the best interest of both boys! Perhaps talking things over with a reputable rescue may help ease your mind.

I doubt that Jasper has realised what he has done. Perhaps having him neutered and living with a girl may be a better option for him than trying him with a youngster again?

Thanks Wiebke,
I am not cross with Jasper, i love him so much. But i also love the baby, i am so sad because we just cant take extra pigs. If I kept the baby what age would be best for him? He's 3 months old. I e mailed the rescue and she has replied, i can basically do whatever i think is best. But i just dont know. :(

Well my husband and I had a chat about what to do. I was so upset at the thought of parting with any of the boys. We have observed Jasper and he actually seems quite happy, we had him out for floor time and he popcorned and seemed jolly. Jem however has been crying a bit. So we have decided to get another friend for Jem, he is a sociable piggy so we think he will bond with another baby. We will keep a close eye on Jasper and if he seems unhappy we will have to think of rehoming. 5 piggies is definately the limit of what we can take, i am ill so this will be enough work for me! We are wondering if Jasper is going to be one of those guinea pigs who doesnt like company. He hates Dougal our other boar, and Ted who is a very sweet and laid back. I feel so relieved that we can keep them, i cried all afternoon :))
We have chosen our new baby already, just need a name to go with Jem now.
Thanks for all your support XxXxXxXxXxXx

good luck, i thought my boy george hated all guineas but found he just had a problem with boys so neutering and adding a girl may be an option with the older one x
