Hello everyone! I have a pig who is about to be six years old in less than a week, named Frank. About a year ago he weighed 1060 grams. The past few months his weight has slowly gone down, and I just weighed him last night and he’s at 842 grams now. His weight has fluctuated over the past few months but now we’re kind of stuck at between 840-850 grams. Is this an okay weight for a six year old male pig? He has a great appetite and his poops look healthy. He’s also given benebac probiotic every night along with hay 24/7, one tbsp of oxbow pellets, and a variety of veggies every day. I can feel his hip bones and his spine when I pet him which makes me sad :( is 842 grams an okay weight for him? Thanks so much for responding. Here is the sweetest picture of my little Frankie :)

Older piggies can lose weight but it’s important to get him checked out by a vet to rule out any underlying health issues which could be causing him to eat less hay.

Also, check his heft to determine whether he is still a good size for himself - the guide below explains but you check around the ribs not the hips

Weight - Monitoring and Management

I agree with @Piggies&buns, please do get your piggy checked by a vet. Our older piggy was slowly losing weight and the vet found that she has arthritis in her spine. The pain was affecting her appetite as she found it more difficult to get around the cage. She has been prescribed pain relief and we are also giving her a vitamin supplement. This has made a huge difference to her quality of life and she has regained some of the weight she lost.

So a trip to the vet is the best thing for Frank, as age related ailments can often be successfully treated. :)

My Edward who’s 6 and a half weighed around 1100g in his prime. He’s now weighing in at 950g and has done since last summer. He was vet checked and the vet found nothing wrong so put it down to his age.

Please do have your Frank vet checked just to make sure that there’s no underlying medical issues for his weight loss
