Hi all
My 2 year old boar eugene just did something very strange and we aren’t sure if he had a seizure or was doing some very hardcore popcorning? He was doing his usual mooch around the living room when he stopped and was rolling around like on his back and he looked like he had no control over his body. He’s fine now and we’ve been googling and I’ve looked on here and from the videos I’ve seen it looks more like an extreme popcorn than a seizure. We will take him to the vet but just wondering if anyone has experienced this?

Hello, it is most likely a one off but I would personally have him checked over by your vet just to rule out a neurological issue. Guinea pigs don’t usually roll on their backs and lose control of their bodies during a popcorning session although I guess it could be a possibility but either way, I’d still have him checked over x

How long was he on his back for? Was it a split-second sort of thing or for a more prolonged period of time?

Hi

I would have him seen if there are repeats. Often these episodes are one-offs and a vet cannot find anything. Please take a video if you can so you can show it to a vet. We cannot comment just based on what you are telling us.

I have a cat who has seizures and it is... distinctive. We got her seen by a vet and they advised that we keep a diary of observed seizures; a video is a great idea (not least because pigs are pros at acting fine when a vet is watching!). It was easier with our mog though because there was no doubt it was anything else.

I've seen a guinea pig seize before but he was actively dying, and honestly the whole thing was traumatic and 15 years ago so I don't remember enough to comment. If in doubt though a vet is always a good bet!
