Oh man. It’s been rough without my dear Clifford pig. Oh how I miss him. I’ve been really hesitant on getting new pig if I’m being honest. I knew I would get one eventually, but I didn’t think I would get one until next month

Leo kinda gave me the push. He’s been acting a bit depressed for about a week. It’s been about three weeks since the loss of my beautiful Clifford. Once I saw these signs in Leo, I instantly looked for a new friend. Once my application was accepted, it’s been interesting. The rescue only had one super shy boy. I thought about it for a while, and decided a shy boy is not what Leo needs. Leo looks up to other pigs, and is quite shy himself and needs a confident friend for guidance. After turning that down, they immediately told me they had a boy who’s cage mate just passed away as well, and is super sweet and gentle.

I always look for personality more than age. What I wanted was a young pig who’s got that confidence, as I haven’t had much luck with adopting older pigs. I’m sure I could of spent weeks finding the pig I wanted, but I realized I’m putting my wants over Leo’s needs. So this boy I’m seeing tomorrow is around 3 or 4 and his background is unknown.

The rescue is about an hour away. Leo is going to see if they are a good fit. So they will have a introduction there, have the car ride home, and will be going in the play pen to make sure everything is ok before going in the cage.

I have one picture that the rescue sent me, but it’s not the best so I’ll update tomorrow.

Thanks for reading :)

I hope the piggy date goes well... we lost our girl on xmas day and my other pig has been away 2 nights now at a rescue choosing who she wants to live with.. best of luck.. x

Good Luck to you and Leo, I hope all goes well, sounds like an ideal arrangement for both lonely piggies.

I just wanna make sure everything is solid before I show pictures. Honestly, Leo has been very annoying through the entire thing. They had a minor scuffle, but they are sleep now. I’ll separate when blood is drawn but hopefully that wont happen. I think there both antsy from the long car ride, but the new pig is already taking food from my hand and letting me pet him. He was apart of some project to help kids get used to holding small animals at a local vets office, so he’s really just a angel. Will keep you updated.

Aww fingers crossed for you. I collected Winny today and 2 new friends... they have finally settled down, over an hour in the car, lots of chasing being done by Winny - as if to say ' this is my house '! Fingers crossed for us both!

They are still in the play pen but I’m going to put them in the cage soon. They seem to be settling down. Leo learned the new pig likes his space, so he stopped being in his face. There are still some chasings and teeth chattering but that’s expected. I think they both just need a good nights sleep as its been a long day for them both. They are definitely not best friends, but they tolerate each other and I think they need some more time together to get to know one another. For now, I have a fleece forest and two entrance hidey in the cage with two water bottles and hay stations.

I decided to separate them but they can still interact through the bars. They need some more bonding time, and I can tell they are both stressed and I think a bit overwhelmed. I’m just to exhausted to keep going today, so I’ll try all again tomorrow.

Here’s a pic of him showing off his cataract.

I just noticed I’m busy tomorrow, so I’ll have to move the introduction 2.0 to Monday.

With boars you really shouldn’t stop and start introductions as they will have to start again from scratch next time they meet in the flesh. Ideally you see it through from start to finish in one unbroken session, however long that takes. What I would say is that when you feel ready to re-introduce next time them please make sure you have a completely free period so that you can see the whole process through to the end - whether that is success and living permanently together or failure and them living permanently apart.
Please read the boars guide which explains about boar introductions. A Comprehensive Guide to Guinea Pig Boars

Yeah I know I put them in the cage too early, and by then it was already late at night and i was mentally exhausted to keep going, so I decided just to try another day. I also think it would be good for them to get used to each other though the divider first. This is the longest introduction I’ve ever been through, which is why i think I tried to rush it which was a terrible idea on my part.

Hope it works out for them, don’t beat yourself up, it’s a nerve wracking process at the best of times x

Ok so the boys are now in the cage together. The introduction went great, but now that they are in the cage, they are having issues. No blood was drawn, but they had a little scuffle and some hair was pulled out of Leo. Some rumbling going on now too (but that’s expected). I only have two way hideys, in the cage right now. They are now eating some hay but I’ll stay In the room for a while. It’s gonna be hard to sleep tonight, I’m nervous something might happen.

So sorry to hear this, is it getting worse & worse? :( Sometimes it just doesn't work out. Not your fault.

Sorry it doesn't seem to be working.
It's such a tough call to have to make but I think most of us have been there at some point.
You tried and hopefully you will find a friend for Leo eventually.

The introduction itself was much better. It looked as if both pigs were doing fine and understood there place. And it went bad when I put them in the cage after ten minutes. They were fighting. No blood, but so much teeth chattering, chasing, and some fur was pulled out.

I’m thinking of just waiting until a baby comes in, if I really have to give him back. Talking to the adoption owner about the situation but will update you all. I’m thinking I may try one more time, just to make sure my judgement really is correct.

But I’m not sure yet. It’s just been a difficult week with life in general, and I just need a break so the update might not come until a while.

(The introduction itself was two hours. Ten minutes after being put in the cage)
