Just picked wendy up and noticed she left a bloody mark on my top :'( :'(

Checked her over and she has no cuts or any marks on her. she did wee blood about this time last year and the vet put her on metacam for a suspected water infection, she then lost lots of weight, stopped eating and got worse and worse until we took her off metacam. She got steadily better and has been bright as a button.

Her general health is fine, she is eating and drinking well and happily trotting about. What i'm asking is that because i think it was exactly the same time last year do guinea pigs get seasons / periods?

I'm really worried about my little button, hope someone can help xx

Pigs do come into season but it's not yearly, I'm not certain but I think it's quite regularly, maybe monthly liike human ovulation? There shouldn't be in any blood at this time I don't think. Maybe it is a slight bladder or urine infection. One of my boys has this at the minute, he was peeing blood last night. The metacam your vet gave wendy wouldn't clear up a urine infection as metacam is a painkiller. Baytril or Bactrim or I think the third one is Septrim should be used for urine infections, the most common one being Baytril. Does Wendy have any other symptoms? Pooing and weeing fine? Does she squeak while she pees? Does she look like she hunches over when trying to go to the toilet? All these could be symptoms of a urine infection.

I've not seen her hunching or wheeking when she pee's. The only thing i have noticed was that i think she may have lost a tiny little bit of weight. we have no scales here so i have no waay of checking though :(

I think you are right and she was on baytril and metacam last time. We are going to keep an eye on her today and then off to the vets tom if no better.

I've put her back on vetbed as she was back on woodshavings, do you think the woodshavings may have contributed? I feel awful for putting them back on shavings but found it really difficult to keep clean.

Hiya, piggies come in to season every 17 days ish and dont display any signs except some can become grumpy (a bit like me LOL) I'd pop your piggy on some fleece vet bed and then you can see clearly if there is any blood and maybe pop to the vets tomorrow.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice, i called the vet and spirited her up to him! The vet says possibly water infection so she has some septrin. Banana flavoured but Wendy was not pleased at all, she's such a feisty little sugar plum, wont take anything if she thinks you want her to have it! Got a fair amount on her chin but most of it in her mouth :)

Any syringe feeding tips anyone? She's a bit of a wriggler to say the least, even the vet struggled to keep her still so he could look at her!

Also has anyone used septrin before? specifically asked for no more baytril as it made her so bad last time but wondering whether septrin may make her go off her food again?

Septrin is the drug of choice for UTI and is unlikely to cause any problems. What dose has the vet prescribed?.

If you are having trouble hold your piggy ,have a look at Peters health pages-towel wrapping technique. This will hold the piggy firm.

Ooh thats good news thank you. I'll take a look at the link too. The vet has told me to give her 2ml a day does that sound right? He checked a dosage book before he prescribed which made me feel a little happier too. :)
They are different vet than the one we took her to last time she was poorly and i'm lots happier with them, glad we moved.

Yes,the dose is o.k.I normally split a high dose like that into 1ml am and 1 ml pm.

That sounds like a better option 2ml is difficult to get down her too, i think it may be easier to split it into 2 seperate doses. Thanks so much for your help, i was really worried it would make her poorly like the baytril. Fingers crossed it will help her not make her worse. :)

Ooh just had a thought - i've changed their food from burgess supa guinea to pets at home nuggets a little while ago do you think that could have anything to do with wendys problem? can a food change cause a water infection?

It should be o.k.I have not had much trouble with Baytril, but I know it can aggrevate the digestive sytem in some piggies/I have given high doses of Septrin to gps with no problem.Paws crossed that it will do the trick.

Metacam is an analgesic and anti inflammatory. It has a side effect of kidney damage.I only use this drug with caution and it can affect the appetite.

Unfortunately,at the moment Metacam is the best painkiller we have and it is less dangerous than the alternative Rimidal.

Gps come on heat every 15 to 17 days for approx 12 hours. This can vary with every sow.Just occasionaly,a sow on heat will pass a pink discharge. This is normally a one off,and does not happen very often. It does not constitute a health problem.

Hmm that has made me wonder a bit especially considering she seems healthy in every other way... she weighs 920 which seems ok for her size, she's not exactly a big piggie. She's 2 years old.

No. a food change would not cause an infection.(unless the change is to Gerty!).
