Forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere but when I get my boys out for floor time, sometimes they both rub their bottoms on the blanket, one does it then the other follows suit. Then sometimes after this they get excited and squeal and sometimes popcorn. Can someone advise me on such behaviour. Thanks :)

that's totally normal behaviour for boars - sows also sometimes rub their rear ends on the floor too - sometimes scenting sometime wiping off a poop!

It's usually scent marking and then the other piggie following is then scent marking it too. If you watch their butts as they do it they tend to sort of shift it around and it widens a bit. It looks strange.

It's scent marking, and both genders do it! Guinea pigs roam in groups around a certain territy, big enough to feed them, so they need to declare what is theirs and what are their "piggy hotels", abandoned sets that they use for resting. ;)

I am still laughing now. Esp when after doing it they get all excited and look all pleased with themselves :woot:
They really are amusing creatures. My cleanouts sometimes take hours because I get so engrossed watching them and not getting on with the job In hand. especially when they are running round my feet as a couple are toe biters :lol!:

If you look part the hair on their rear end, just above their "bot-bot", you will see a patch of skin with no hair on it, about the size of a small coin. This is the scent gland. Despite popular belief, both males AND females have them. They scoot their bottoms on the ground to mark their scent.

You do have to clean their scent glands occasionally as a waxy discharge can build up and get stinky. In fact, I spent today doing the very same to my own guinea pigs! I love it when my mum asks "What did you do today?" and I say "Wiping waxy discharge off my guinea pig's scent gland!". It's a glamorous life us guinea pig owners lead! :xd:
