Adopted 18 week old Oscar from p@h as no one wanted him cos he was an Albino!

everytime I touch him/stroke him he like spazzes, and twitches almost like a pop corn, he hates his ears being touched and shakes his head if you touch them

is this some sort of 'not liking being touched' or just not used to being touched!

mine do this sometimes and even tell me how much they dont like me, I have had them 3 weeks - but they are getting better so I would say persevere. However I would suggest you get him checked over at the vets incase there is a medical problem as to why he doesnt like being touched (mainly because of where he has come from).

Today I managed to stroke fudge and minty on their noses without holding them and both closed their eyes - crystal who is nomally calmer wasnt having any of it so she had a full on cuddle and she chattered away to me during the whole thing, think she was telling me what had happened in her life lately :))

He isn't going to be used to being handled, being in p@h he's also going to have been stressed from all the comings and goings and noises of a large pet shop, give him some time to settle. If he is flinching at his ears being touched he may have an ear infection/mites.

I thought that but ive checked his ears and treated him for mites/fleas and hes fine all the other time!

tho he is a complete loon! she bolts round his cage like a nutter, pop corning all over the shop!

I also think cos he is still young he is very jerky and jittery! I remember my 3 guinea pig babies(rescues pregnant mum) being all jumpy and no time for cuddles ha!

yhh i think its going to be another Basil! my previous PEW (RIP:0) he took about 3 months before he was handlable without iron gloves or wrapped in towels

I still cant get through a full handle/cuddle with all three without one of them screaming bloody murder at me (I am sure that word will get edited, and its a term of phrase rather than a swear word). Today it was minty, yesterday it was fudge, the day before it was crystal. Fudge wants to go and run around a bit more, minty is warey of being caught and crystal just has off days.

awww Oscar hasn't found his squeek yet :(

I got Zapp mine from p@h before I knew about their reputation from the forum, anyway I held him with a fleecy blanket wrapped around him and just laid sat up on the bed with him on my chest, I did this for quite a number of days and then inventually I managed to stroke his nose and between his ears and then I loosen the blanket until he sat on it on my chest and then I removed it and eventually just laid with him sat on my chest and then gradually tickled his nose and now he is fine. He used to shiver and make all sorts of noises cos he was nervous then he started to chatter away at me when I was talking to the kids he would squeak away and then when I stopped he stopped it was quite funny. Stick with it you have to win his confidence. sorry about no punctuation was being called by the kids and wanted to get my message down. xx

aha thanks! yh my basil took months to get confidence!

I have almost the exact same problem. When I open the cagedaisy runs and hides but dandelion kind of freezes and when I touch dandelion she runs away. I also have trouble holding them. I held dandelions bum and her neck not to firmly but not to gently and she squealed like crazy. Whats happening there!? I dont want to hold just her bum because she will topple. Is she just scared of me holding her?

Remember your PPC!
That stands for Perseverance, Patience, and Cucumber!

Remember, no matter how jumpy the pig, they'll allways be very greedy little creatures. :D If you get hold of yours firmly and get it sitting in your lap, then produce a treat, it will soon associate good treats and cuddles with you. :)

I had this issue with one of my more recent piggies, Cachino, he was HORRIBLE. I suppose he had issues due to being the one in the shop that didnt sell.. but he was an absolute nutter, struggling and even trying to bite when ever I picked him up. I'm not afraid of getting nibbled though, I'm just scared of him being scared of me and unhappy for the rest of his life!

I persevered, and he's much nicer these days. Try not to sneak up on your sensitive pigs, because that can make them FREAK out :O

Singing to a nervous pig can also calm them down, but dont tell anyone I said that..
