Hi, we’ve had our new girls for just over a week they are about 6 months old . They hadn’t been handled for a while before we collected them so they are very nervous and scared.
They are coming out for their food when no one is around and run/hide when we approach the hutch or talk to them. We’ve been cleaning their hutch whilst they are in there but they do get very scared. They sit in their hidey most of the day.
I just wanted to ask for advice, would you continue to clean around them. Or would you try to get them out (with a hidey) and put them into their run. They haven’t been out yet.
Also, would you wait until they feed from our hand until we get them out for cuddles?

A good place to start is here:

Arrival in a home from the perspective of pet shop guinea pigs

Your piggies sound perfectly normal as they have only been home for a very short time.
It will take time for them to settle down and learn to trust you and their new environment.
For now I would leave them in their hutch and clean around them.
Also make sure they have plenty of places to hide so they feel safe.

There is a lot of great information in our new owners guides too:

Thank you Swissgreys I’ll do that. Yes it is very early days, just don’t want to freak them out more. Yes I keep reading the documents, this such a great forum. Thanks again

:agr: too. Maybe sit by the cage intermittently and talk to them in a quiet soft tone. Use the same voice when you are cleaning around them. Would be lovely to see some pics when they are settled in 😁
