Today I notices Star scratching a lot and so got her out to check and noticed this on her back :( it wasn't there on Thursday when I did their weekly health check, so it must have appeared after that. I have rang the vets and the earliest appointment they have is Saturday morning, do you think it will be okay to wait until then or should I try and get her an appointment sooner somewhere else?

Hi!

Keep an eye on the patch for the next few days. See a vet sooner if necessary once it becomes more obvious what exactly is going on so you can step in with the correct vet strength treatment. having to sit by and wait without stepping in can be one of hardest things you have to do as an owner when faced with the onset of skin problems but it is necessary because what you lose at the start you more than gain by treating correctly at full strength when you and your vet are stepping with the correct treatment. Right now, it could be the onset of both fungal or mites. ;)

I would however recommend that you carefully wash your hands everytime you handle your piggies or any of their stuff. You always should but now is even more important in case it is the start of a fungal ringworm patch (which can transmit to humans and other pet species) and not a mange or hay mites patch. The difference between fungal and parasites (which require different treatment) should become clearer over the next 2-3 days
New piggy problems: URI - ringworm - skin parasites
