Hi everyone! So recently my guinea pigs had bald patches on their fur so we took them to the vet and they have mites. We got them treated and I thought that they were going to get better however I looked at my guinea pig Gus’s back and he has a rather noticeable scab where the bald spot used to be. I tried googling it and found nothing. Is this normal or should I be worried? Thanks!

It’s not easy to see from the picture. Does it look fresh, sore etc? If so, then please go back to the vet for a check up.

A vet visit would be good. It looks like he might be biting the affected area if the mites haven't gone. Tagging @Wiebke

It would help to know a little more about the initial treatment, as the standard treatment for mites is usually a course spread over several weeks.
What medication was used and how often did you have to apply it?

Also what country are you based in?
This can help us tailor our advice a little better.

Hi!

How many rounds and what treatment product have they had? Just a single application or a low dosed broad spectrum product is not enough. Please see a vet again. How familiar is the vet you are seeing with guinea pigs?

A full course of ivermectin consists of at least three rounds (more if needed) at the product specific intervall; the first two are there to kill the emerging mites and the third (and fourth or even fifth round) to take care of the stragglers. Biting open the affected area is not at all uncommon in a more severe or undertreated case of mange mites. :(

Only if a full course with a vet grade ivermectin product has happened would I look further as to what is causing the pain in the skin.
It can be a lowered immune system or it could be (fungal) ringworm, in which case a white crust would be forming on top. Ringworm can be temporarily suppressed by ivermectin but it cannot be healed by it.
